A former Houston police union official will remain in jail, accused of stealing more than $597,000 from union bank accounts.
Former police officer Matthew Calley, 44, was indicted last Thursday of first-degree felony theft in excess of $200,000 and misapplication of fiduciary funds, said prosecutor Matthew Peneguy.
Calley appeared in an orange jail uniform in Judge Michael McSpadden's state district courtroom for his arraignment. He remains in the Harris County Detention Center in lieu of $2 million bail.
Calley's attorney could not be reached for comment afterward.
A senior police officer with 25 years on the force, Calley resigned from the HPOU board in January after the alleged theft was discovered. He retired from the police department in February, Gary Blankinship, president of the Houston Police Officers Union, said.
