Pittsburgh's Macy's union complains over new all-black dress code

Associated Press - July 19, 2007 3:45 PM ET

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Workers at a Pittsburgh Macy's store are filing a fashion grievance against the store's new dress code.

The new rules take effect September Fourth and require employees to wear black pants and shirts or black dresses.

Thomas Scheid of the Local 101 union says the new dress code will result in significant out-of-pocket expenses for employees.

A spokesman for the Cincinnati-based retailer says the dress code makes it easier for shoppers to identify sales representatives and is already in place in many other locations.

Under the new dress code, employees can still wear any color shirt, tie, blouse or accessories.

1. Get over it

But it would be nice if the store either provided a limited number of them per year or sold them at cost to the employees

2. Black fades quickly
And believe me, people with low incomes in tacky faded black are not doing anything for the image of Macy's. They look like hell at our local store.

4. Put Up or Quit
That is basically what we were told at Target, which is non-union, when they went to their red and khaki dress code. We had to purchase our own clothes although they did discount the crummy red polo shirts, which by the way I hate. When I left after 10 years I had one closet that was full of red t-shirts. I probably will never wear red again!
