Sadly the out-of-area private equity firm now owner of Stella D'oro has continued after 9 mos. to refuse to negotiate with the BCTGM union, preferring to demand take it or leave it concessions including up to 25% wage cuts, transfer of large amounts of health insurance premiums onto the workers, reduction of paid holidays and vacation, and elimination of sick days and Saturday differential pay. These cuts translate into a loss of a living wage, and hit the single mothers especially hard.
The workers are asking the Stella D'oro customers to boycott the products, now being produced w/ scab labor, and to fax plant manager Dan Myers at 718-884-6454.
Stella D'oro flyerA number of other unions are joining the picket line in support, but NYC police are treating the picket line as illegal assembly using flimsy excuses, and are enforcing entry to the illegal replacement workers, since the courts aren't upholding labor law. Keep up w/ the latest on the strike by going to the
new Stella D'oro strike website.
