Worker to experience a week working in all 50 states

By MICHELLE SPREHE
The Kansas City Star

When Daniel Seddiqui was a young boy, he wanted to be a park ranger, a dentist and a journalist. He couldn’t make up his mind.

Now he’s 26, and his indecisiveness is leading him to all 50 states, where he will hold 50 jobs for one week each. This week, he’s working as a boilermaker in Kansas City.

“I didn’t even know what a boilermaker was before I got here,” said Seddiqui, of Los Altos, Calif.

It took him eight months to get his job at Boilermakers Local 83 in Kansas City.

“It’s a dangerous job, and there are insurance issues,” said Randy Cruse, business manager of Local 83. “He’s shadowing and being exposed to the things boilermakers do. But it’s up to the contractor to decide if he will do anything.”

Seddiqui isn’t getting paid as he watches others cut and weld metal for boilers, and if he does any work this week, a contractor may or may not pay him. But the local is paying for his motel room.

1. Studs Terkel wrote a book called "Working"; this man is taking
it a step further. Sounds real interesting.

Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do

Working (full title: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do) is a book by the noted oral historian and radio broadcaster Studs Terkel.

It is an exploration of what makes work meaningful for people in all walks of life: from Lovin' Al the parking valet, to Dolores the waitress, from the fireman to the business executive, the narratives move constantly between mundane details, emotional truths and existential questioning.

2. Pretty cool. I wonder how many of those jobs will downsize him. That's REAL work--losing it.
