Change Has Come To America - AFL-CIO Hails Obama Election: "It Means There Is Hope" For Workers

http://www.laborradio.org/node/9795

By Doug Cunningham

: “It has been a long time comin'. But tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America!"

It was a momentous, historic moment of hope and of redemption as millions of workers nationwide heard the news that Barack Obama is our President-elect. Karen Ackerman is Political Director of the AFL-CIO, which fielded an army of hundreds of thousands of workers to get out the vote for Obama.

: “It's a very, very poignant moment. This moment is so important for the history of this country and for working people in this country. It means that there is hope and a chance to really rebuild the middle class."

Obama told his supporters in Chicago that tomorrow brings huge challenges that will be met with the resolve to change America.

: “The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even in one term. But America, I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you, we as a people will get there."

Ackerman says real change has to happen now – including immediate economic help for working people and labor law reform.

: "Those measures in and of themselves will ensure a different path for this country and a rebuilding of the middle class."

3. We won't know for a week if Obama took Omaha or not

The R's are crushed mentally, like everywhere else. Obama trails 569 votes in unofficial returns. The early/absentee votes won't be counted for a few days.

One Nebraska electoral vote remains up for grabs
