A theory on high gas prices and a possible action
I do not think anything substantial is going to be done about high gas prices until after the election. The people most affected by the high prices would logically be the Democrats. We make up most of the poor and the middle class and are thus most hurt by the prices. Bush says he can't really do anything about the price of gas and the Administration is telling us to conserve and make less trips. Basically they are saying, "stay at home as much as possible". Less people out and about, means less dissent and they hope, a low voter turnout in Nov. It is hard to mobilize when you are not mobile.
The possible action- Everyone buy a gas can and a gallon of gas and mark it NOV. 7,2006. I'm sure some of our fellow DUers can come up with a catchy bumper sticker campaign. My contribution- I've got my gallon reserved for Nov. Do you?

1. I don't understand what this would achieve.
Buying more gas won't drive prices down. Can you explain the reasoning behind this?

2. I've got a gallon set aside
no matter what prices go to and no matter how little I am able to travel for the rest of the year, I have enough gas set aside to get me to the voting booth in Nov.

4. Okay, I at least understand the reasoning now.
I'm still not convinced that it will achieve much. It should also be pointed out that gasoline can be dangerous and people should not store it in their home. If you do this, use an approved container and keep it in someplace like a tool shed or car trunk.

But, as Walt Disney points out in post #3, prices will probably be down somewhat by then. They'll do what they can to lower them before the election. High prices aren't helping the Republicans.

3. Gas prices will be lower in November.
Wait until then to buy your gas.

6. i think you're letting your imagination run away with you, BUT...
I think you're letting your imagination run away with you, but if it makes you feel better, go ahead and do it. I just have two pieces of advice. First of all, you should make it a 5-gallon can, not a 1-gallon one. Secondly, be sure to stop off at an autoparts or home store and get yourself some Sta-Bil. If you don't know what that is, here's the website: http://www.goldeagle.com/sta-bil/

You see, this way the gas will actually still be GOOD on November 7th.

7. I appreciate the advice and comments
I actually can walk to my polling place, also. I hope no one needs 5 gallons to drive to and from their poll. This is more of a symbolic action as much as a practical idea. I know the dangers of storing gas. I had to go through Katrina here in Ms. and was wise enough to fill up both of our vehicles before the storm and conserve during the aftermath. Thanks for the tip on Sta-Bil. I've got another hurricane season to get through. Thought the bumper sticker idea was a good "in yer face" kind of thing. I will donate my gallon to the local GOTV folks.

8. I thought that you were probably aware of the dangers,
but I wanted to make sure that everyone else reading this was also aware.

9. It's good that you're trying to be creative
but I don't understand what this would achieve even as a symbolic action. Are the Republicans going to say "Uh oh, they're saving cans of gas, we better change our policies"? Are the voters going to say "Wow, look at that guy saving a can of gas. I'd better go out and vote straight Democratic"? Are the people going to say "Look, they're saving gas, let's have a national strike"? I'm not trying to discourage you, but I think the idea needs a little more thought.
