US Govt. plans to detain sick travelers
Edited on Sat Apr-22-06 12:34 AM by cynatnite
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Infectious disease experts and the American Civil Liberties Union raised concerns on Friday about an agreement that would allow U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and customs agents to detain anyone who looked sick with bird flu.

The memorandum of understanding, a copy of which was provided to Reuters, also provides for Customs and Border Protection agents to give personal details of airline passengers to the CDC.

It was signed in October by Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt and Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. HHS spokeswoman Christina Pearson denied it was secret or sinister.

You know it's pretty bad when I can't even be surprised anymore.

1. Then as an American....
...it should be your duty to sneeze, sniffle, and look miserable on any international flight you land with....allow an extra 2 weeks to get home and live on the governments dime...one way or the other we must break them...

2. seal the borders once H T H transmission gets going in, say, china
Edited on Sat Apr-22-06 12:52 AM by oscar111
easier to seal borders.. land is four thousand miles..

than to try to seal/quarantine parts of our forty thousand towns.. two miles perimeter, say, each town's area of sick folks.... so that will be

eighty thousand miles of sealing in the current bush plan, for once HTH transmission comes into the US by some airplane tourist.

four vs. eighty. Border seal vs. town blocks sealing.

you pick.

Oh, and BTW, in the border plan, no one gets sick. vs. bush plan, millions die.

FOOTNOTE
land borders are the only hard part of sealing.. few will come in by sea or small planes as druggies do.

PS .. the OP plan is too weak. Folks can shed ordinary flu viruses FIVE DAYS before any symptoms appear. So, obviously the weak plan in the OP will let the HTH birdflu into our land... giving us eighteen months of chaos, ... food not available in stores, electricity off, hospitals unstaffed as nurses and docs stay home in fear... millions dead.. water utilities unstaffed for the same reason.. so no water in your home.. neighbors.. the "Kalikak brothers" planning to raid your house for your food cache. Not very pretty.

3. Stupid "plan". It's already too late if someone arrives looking sick...
...because it takes 3-10 days before the disease begins to present itself with visible symptoms.

Quite a few sick people will have landed before we spot the first sick one.

5. How does one "look sick" with bird flu?
Edited on Sat Apr-22-06 12:55 AM by TwoSparkles
Wouldn't air sickness "look" like bird flu?

Gee, if you have to barf--because you get air sickness--don't use one of those airline barf bags! I'm sure the government implants transmitters in them. If you get sick, an alarm at the Pentagon goes off and three thugs from the White House show up to cart you away!

For the love of Pete!

It's crap like this that makes me afraid of bird flu! These ingrates don't know what they're doing!

When will the grown ups be in charge?

10. the great influenza
for a rather frightening insight into the 1918-19 influenza pandemic. the parallels between the wilson administration then and the bush administration now are shocking. I'm just hoping that when his term ends, we can right things as quickly as they did then.

9. That is funny.
I guess you get to gate and bend over for a little temp taking. This country has gone mad. Used to have to have a small pox card to get into country at one time. I can not recall when that was stopped. It also took about 2 weeks or more to get a passport then. It also was stamped where you could not go. That was 50 years ago. Going back wards is par for this country I guess.
