Poll question: Just curious, what are you theories regarding 9-11?
Edited on Fri Apr-21-06 09:01 PM by Downtown Hound
Understand that I am not espousing any conspiracy theory as being the truth, I'm simply interested in what DU'ers have to say. There are 3 main schools of thought out there. They are:

The official story is correct. Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda were solely responsible.

LIHOP-Let it happen on purpose. The government knew the attack was coming and let it happen so as to gather public support for the neo-conservative agenda.

MIHOP-Made it happen on purpose. The government was behind the whole thing and blamed Al Qaeda so as to gather support for the neo-conservative agenda.

What say you?

1. The "government" and al Qaeda are the same thing.
MIHOP is LIHOP.

3. Both are terrorist threats
Edited on Fri Apr-21-06 08:57 PM by Loge23
Not sure what you mean by that, but I agree that both are terrorists and both are threats to our freedom.
Edited to clarify "the government" is the current administration.

2. regarding option #1....
You know, I'd like to believe the official story in many respects, and under other circumstances I might be content to just do so, but here's the rub: no matter what you think about the official story itself, or any of the LIHOP/MIHOP variants, you have to factor in that the Bush administration lies reflexively about EVERYTHING. The political lie is their favorite propaganda technique, which brings me to the second uncomfortable truth: everything they say MUST be examined for propaganda value, because nothing oozes out from under their rock unless it serves some propaganda role. This leads me to AUTOMATICALLY distrust the "official story."

I'm still waiting for answers.

We have known liars' in the white house. Why do people give them the benefit of the doubt on this?

MIHOP.

7. I didn't vote. I do think Osama was the planner, but I believe
Shrub hated Clinton sooo bad, he and his admin dismissed every word of warning they were given. Had they at least checked to see if there was any truth to what they were told, they might have been able to prevent the attacks. I'm not convinced they knew and just let it happen, but I think their stubborness and hatered prevented them from doing the job they should have been doing!

of August 6th.

18. I guess it depends on your interpretation of LIHOP.
To me, that means they knew the plan and did nothing. I could be proven wrong, but I don't believe that. I believe they are guilty of negligence because they simply dismissed everything the Clinton admin had told them. That's different, in my mind, than knowing and doing nothing.

Yes, there was an explisit threat in the PDB, but isn't that like me telling a traveling salesman "I'm going to shoot you with a .30.06 rifle...soon!" He would have no way of knowing where or when.

14. Agreed, their disregard for the evidence was negligent...
at the very least.

Their ego's prevented them from acknowledging anything from Clinton's administration.

11. As I watched the second tower come down, I told my family MIHOP
I told so many people that same day, some of whom were so disgusted with that statement they dropped me as a friend right then and there.

But I honestly believe the truth will come out somehow. Even if it was as small a help as nudges, winks and several helping hands, this Admin took a pipedream of OBL's and turned it into a reality.

I mean jayzus, Atta's passport survived???

13. Just a reminder, re: 9/11.
"Posts about so-called "conspiracy theories" are not permitted on Democratic Underground, except in the September 11 forum."

While we try and provide some "room" for discussion of the attacks on 9/11, we will hold to the above rule. Thanks for your consideration.

21. I'm a LIHOPPER although I could also go with general incompetence
9/11 was brilliant in its simplicity.

Nothing I've seen from the people who brought us hurricane Katrina, Terri Schaivo, and the Iraq war makes me believe that they could have pulled it off.

I think they knew something was coming and did nothing to stop it in order to advance the PNAC agenda.

22. I say MIHOP

"Anti-conspiracists insist that, unlike the rest of us, the rich
and powerful do not act with deliberate intent." Michael Parenti

In a roomful of smoking guns, they demand a smoking cannon.

The well-known term "conspiracy" may not actually serve us very
well, since it suggests an arcane aberration rather than the
normal workings of our ruling class.

The trivialization of conspiracism may itself be a conspiracy.

Humpty-Dumpty was pushed.

With the JFK assassination we gave up part of our democracy and
we're not going to get it back unless we find out who did it.
Prof. Peter Dale Scott sees the JFK assassination as an "internal
adjustment".

23. personally, I'm FIHOP . . .
"Facilitated It Happening On Purpose" . . .

kind of a middle ground between LIHOP and MIHOP . . . I don't believe they have the brains to plan and execute the thing themselves, but neither do I believe that their role was a passive one (as LIHOP implies) . . .

24. Other - Let it happen through criminal negligence
Bush's main pre-9/11 foreign policy obsession was missile defence. They canceled the ABM treaty. Condi was due to give a speech on the subject on 9/11.

They completely ignored terrorism despite warning from the departing Clinton administration and the intelligence community. Once 9/11 happened, they all too happily implemented the PNAC agenda.

I'd suggest there's a heaping pile of room between "official story is true" and LHIOP/MIHOP.
