When Studs Terkel met John Fortune
John Fortune first met the broadcaster Studs Terkel in 1962. Fortune was on tour with the Establishment, and the meeting had a profound effect on his life.

Studs Terkel is known as the man who interviews America, his ability to make people talk is a legend. But what struck John was that nearly all of his interviewees were ordinary folk. 'It was history written not by the generals, but from the ground up.'

Here he meets Terkel again, and finds out how the last four decades have affected them both.

This is a wonderful thirty minutes of radio that went out on the BBC yesterday morning and which you can listen to at their site. It's only a shame that this isn't one of a six part series.

-----

Fortune is best known as a satirist alongside his partner John Bird ("The Long Johns"), who are still very much active today. You can see him in action in these two Iraq war specials with Bird and impressionist Rory Bremner:

3. Me too.
And if you love Studs Terkel, you'll really love him with John Fortune. Fortune is someone I wish was well-known in America.

2. Studs Terkel has done oral history
of America like no other person. You can really get a feel for how things were in the depression for instance, by reading his book "Hard Times".

I have seen him in person at a function in Chicago. He likes to be a regular guy.
