Stephanie Miller's St. Bernard Chester died
Edited on Fri Apr-21-06 09:40 AM by melissinha
Just heard it on her show, as she is not here today. From what I heard, he had just developed congestive heart failure, he was 6 years old.

I am so sorry, Mama, as a dog lover and owner I know how hard it is to lose one's best friend. My condolensces to Stephanie and her remaining dogs.

The guest host just announced that well-wishers visit and if you wanted to donate to: http://www.saintrescue.org/ to honor Chester.

Rest in Peace, Chester.

I'm so sorry for her :(

I love my pups! They never totally grow up or leave home. :-)

The bigger and more high maintenance (I lost my beloved OES in 2001 and still get watery eyes when I think of dear Benjamin), the more I have grieved.

My heart goes out to Stephanie for the loss of her beloved Chester.

If anyone knows her personally, ask her to visit the site ... it touches my heart and gives me peace when I'm missing my "Big Boy" Ben-Ben.

It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. As bad as I imagined this experience to be, it was worse.

30. I had to put my cat to sleep several years ago
and for a long time regreted not being there with him when it happened. After witnessing the euthanasia of my dog, I'm not sure I didn't make the right choice the first time.

Edited on Fri Apr-21-06 12:00 PM by ronnykmarshall
He was in the hospital for about a week and was fighting, but one night when we went to visit he started to fail. My partner was with him when they put him to sleep. I couldn't watch my baby go. This is how I want to remember him.

I am so sad for her as she obviously loved him a lot from the way she affectionately joked about him. Sounded like Chester was a funny, gentle, loving companion.

8. That is SAD.
Big dogs always live less long than small dogs.

This is one reason we got ourselves a miniature dachshund.

11. Oh, that is so sad. Isn't it true that very large dogs have shorter lives?
I think I remember hearing that, but I'm not sure. I see the pic now and he was a beauty. I take care of 6 pets in this household and I think I'm gonna move somewhere sans pets because I simply can't take losing another little friend.

My sincere condolences to Stephanie.

I know its hard to see it this way but, the more it hurts is truly a testament to the love you had for your loved one.

I am dreading the day when my 6 year old Wrigley passes away, but enjoy my time with her.

53. Yes, all the animals we have are rescued "last chance" animals. The
last one, Dee, we found in the middle of the road staggering around. She had to be just a few hours from death. You should see her now! As big as a female German Shepard and a little bit too heavy. heh We also have a 3 legged cute as hell mid size terrier with big ears (kinda looks like that Blue Dog painting), two cats and 2 Indian Ringneck birds. We had two more birds, but bwaaaa! We lost them. One from a possum attack and one that we thought was a male but after 8 years turned out to be a female and died slowly after becoming egg bound. I lost my best friend ever, my SallyCat, in 1998 after almost 18 years of companionship. That's the one that broke my heart. I'm am way too emotional when it comes to animals. I've lost everyone in my family and it still seems like the lost pets are what haunt me.

We have tried to give help to the little ones that no one else would take. It's just that my old heart is getting really tired of breaking. I haven't given up yet. :)

26. Please...don't live without pets.
There are so many dogs and cats that need good homes. I know it's hard to lose them, but think of the joy and happiness you give each other while they are with you.

We had to put our sweet Border Collie, Cody, to sleep last June and it was the hardest thing I've ever done. Two weeks later we brought Buddy home -- a two year old shepard mix that we got from our local shelter. I told my wife, "The house seems so empty without a dog...something is missing."

I know it's hard to lose them but for me, the pluses far outweigh the minuses.

42. Sadly, it's true,
and not just in dogs. Larger members of pretty much any species tend to die younger, mostly because the heart has to work harder to pump blood.

My condolences to Stephanie. St. Bernards are lovely, affectionate giants. It is a breed worth loving, despite their shorter lifespan.

35. Damn, I'm getting choked up here.
As I look at the pictures of Chester, all I can think of is the many times I laughed to the stories Mama would spin about her beloved gentle giant (and all the while Jim's Chester bark boomed in the background). I know what it's like to lose a four-legged family member, and my heart goes out to Steph.

47. I have had a lot of dogs in my life, this is what I picture when one dies
I picture all the other dogs I've had (and my friends and families dogs too) meeting them when they get to heaven, and then they all run together joyously through a beautiful grassy field.

Picturing their passing like this helps me through the pain of my loss.

It is so difficult at first, but eventually the memories will always bring smiles instead of tears. My husband used to change lyrics of songs to place our dogs names in them. We still sing those songs.

Rest in Peace Chester, you were loved.
