Those poor mommy geese! They are just protecting their eggs!

Monroe - The Canada goose egg hunt has become a harrowing rite of spring in Crane Park.

For the third year in a row, the Village of Monroe public works guys have the uncomfortable task of shooing angry geese off their nests and holding them at bay with an umbrella while a worker dunks their eggs in vegetable oil.

The oil closes the shell's pores and prevents the embryos from developing.

John Linderman, assistant supervisor with the village of Monroe DPW, uses an umbrella to ward off angry Canada geese from their nest of eggs at Mill Pond in Crane Park in Monroe.

John Mulligan with the village of Monroe DPW, coats the geese eggs with vegetable oil and places them back in the nest at Mill Pond in Crane Park in Monroe on 4-20-06. The oil will clog the pores so the eggs will not hatch to cut down on the Canada geese.

1. And, since there are eggs in the nest, the goose lays no replacements
Ain't knowledge grand?

3. They're vilified here in Indiana, too ...
... what amazes me is that people refuse to understand that the geese have been passing thru and roosting here for probably thousands of years -- we're infringing on their turf with our suburban sprawl.

4. The mommy goose will get over it.
As someone who has had to deal with goose-turd infestation at a lot of different parks, I thank John for his hard work.

(note to lurking Freepers--this actually appears to be "hard work," as opposed to the Preznit fightin' Terra.)

5. Poor geese.
Don't blame the DPW chaps though, they're just doing their job and I daresay they don't enjoy it much.

6. The Opinion piece I just submitted
I doubt it will be published, but I gave it my best shot!

What I submitted:
"The headline "DPW workers ward off parents to ruin the eggs" was astonishing in itself! The article was worse. I am horrified that this is the practice in your area. I will never understand why humans feel that they have supreme control over all beings. Tampering with nature, because nature may be inconvenient is a horrific practice.

For the religious people that are for this heinous program, "What Would Jesus Do?""

14. Why would this even have any affect? They are migratory
they could kill every goose in Monroe and they would still have geese next year. What a waste.

19. I can't believe so many people are not aware of this
but there are literally millions of Canada Geese that don't migrate and their populations have gotten out of control. I read about this many years ago in Sierra Club magazine. Where I live, every spring I see geese families trying to live in an urban area. Making nests in parking lots and trying to dodge traffic. Now that is horrific to watch. I once saw a dead goose one morning with it's mate honking at its dead body. Another time I saw and adult stuck in four lanes of fast traffic trying desperately to reach the other side of the road. It made it by a feather! I see dead babies and adults every spring.

Controlling the population by coddling their eggs is a very humane act. Considering their circumstances.

23. I didn't know that part about not migrating but I still have to think
that geese will continue to look for habitat in that town.

I thought perhaps, if they were like salmon (spawn where they were born) then this program would make some sense but it seems like this egg killing will only make a temporary dent in their population locally.

8. This actually is the most humane way to deal with the geese
I wish they would do it where I live. I read an excellent article in Sierra magazine about this a few years ago. The mom and dad get over it and the population hopefully will be controllable.

It breaks my heart to see the geese setting up nests in parking lots near busy four lanes. Then when the eggs hatch moving those goslings across the streets over and over. I have seen too many dead babies and parents in this city. It is so very sad.

18. it isn't nature
it is human beings. It is human beings who caused the non-migrating Canada geese problem in the first place. About a hundred years ago. As with almost all of the world's problems, blame humans.

:(

peace to you,
lc

21. humans and overdevelopment don't help
but life is very cruel. Life eats life, and when it doesn't, it dies. Nature is very cruel, as is life.:shrug:bummer.

9. Just a thought
Isn't this the same as a human getting an abortion? They are killing embryos/babies! So how does the Pro-Lifers rationalize this?

13. Not quite.
The geese are not making the choice.

I also wonder what the anti-choice crowd has to say about this.

10. How sad
As mankind continues its expansion into natural areas, rather than adapting and working around natures creatures, we just kill them off:eyes:

Tell you what, rather than rendering the eggs unviable, why not just introduce predators to keep the population down? Oh yeah, that's right, that would inconvience humans too much also.

Why do I get the feeling that someday in the future we'll be looking back at this time, shaking our heads at the foolishness of mankind that led to the extinction of Canada geese.

11. in a fucking park in a hick town in rural NY
there is no need to interfere with the breeding habits of wild animals. Don't like goose shit, wipe your feet, YOU get over it. Biodiversity in danger threatens us too, and stocks of wild species are declining across the board. Time for whining douchebags to realize that the natural world is more important than having prim little lawns for humans to wank themselves over.

A resident of another hick town in rural NY, which I like very much, including the geese.

Pardon the language, but this is on par with people who proclaim that they NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED a large car. Our ass-print is too large already, time to raise consciousness and put ourselves on a diet.

And practically, redirect the money to create ways to successfully discourage geese from nesting near said roads, which sad spectacle I have also seen, and otherwise leave them the fuck alone.

24. On a brighter note, one pair of our resident Canadian geese was out with
their little ones this morning. These are the first that I've seen this year, and they're at the 'resemble fuzzy tennis balls' phase. It's amazing to watch them each year - they grow so fast! We counted 6 and hopefully they'll all make it without having a nasty encounter with a turtle, big fish, etc.
