Just saw V for Vendetta--no spoilers...

All I've got to say is Wow. It's quite a statement. My wife and I walked out of the theater blown away by it. Am I alone thinking that the idea is that any or all of us can be V?

3. Knocked my socks off.

I took my 22 year old son and one of his friends for his birthday. My husband went too. We all walked out of it and just looked at each other for a little while, a bit wide eyed then we all smiled. Quite an inspiration, except I maintain non violence, still it can be done that way too.

13. For me

non violence is a difficult thing that I strive for. I was raised in a violent situation, everything was solved with a KO. I have worked through so many issues to bring myself to this point, many because I know my first gut response is to hit to harm. It takes great restraint on my part. I can say that I can maintain non violence to a point. I can't say what my breaking point is but I know if I reach it it will not be pretty and I say this sadly. I try so hard and am so successful but I know there is that point.

V stirred up issues for me that are not comfortable but issues we must all face.

which, believe it or not, makes me far less likely to resort to violence than many people. Most folks just don't seem to understand how unnecessary it is in most situations. And, yeah, I know what you mean about a violent childhood. Mine was far rougher than it should have been. My dad occasionally apologizes for some of it, as much as he can apologize that is, but that's all water under the bridge now.

6. I never read the comic

but I'm not that much of a purist about other peoples' work...Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles notwithstanding. I hated what was done to those books.

My own stuff? Yeah, I'd be a bitch to work with when it came to that.

7. I don't know about the comic version.

But instead of getting my ass off to bed, I brewed some coffee and started on the screenplay I had downloaded a while ago. Reading a full-sized book with Adobe Reader wasn't as much a pain as I thought it might be. I'm about halfway through it, and may end up reading it to the end. It's written well enough, but a looong way from being noteworthy writing. I'll most likely get the DVD whenever it becomes available.

16. Screenplays are hardly my favorite format...

That's not to say, however, that I haven't read my share of them when they struck my interest. I read the screenplay of Spiderman 2 about a year before it came out.

V is very stunning visually...and it's thought provoking as well.

I share your antipathy towards that format, but as I said, the DVD isn't out yet. But the price was right (6 bucks for immediate download). I read a little more of it, and finally got off to sleep. I can imagine the visuals, so I eagerly await the DVD. There's an audible version also available, but I've already used my 2 books per month at http://audible.com.

along my two best friends, they normally arent the type who would be into the kind of movie it is, but they enjoyed it. I walked out of the theatre completely amazed. I wanted to see it again and again. I even went online and looked up quotes and pictures. I cant wait until the dvd comes out!

10. This is one DVD where I think a "mask" gift set would have MONSTER sales!

Now if Warner is smart, they would have a gift package available before the middle of October or earlier, that would contain the V Mask (and perhaps hat, etc. too, or a place on line to order or get a full costume). Then when Halloween comes right before the election, we'd all be equipped with both our DVDs and costumes to repeat what happened in the movie too.

If Warner isn't smart enough (or too "corporate" to do this), perhaps a smaller company like Creative Design (who's done big gift packages in the past for other DVDs) could be persuaded to make this package. Are they still in business? They have done stuff for Warner in the past, like The Matrix, etc. I can't find a website for them now though. An old usenet post indicated that their web address was:

But that address doesn't link to anything now. We should make sure that these two companies hear about how we WANT this gift package, unlike other films where we might not want the added stuff they put in a DVD set.

We are not yet at the stage that Britain is in the movie, thankfully.

The inspiring message I get from V is to act BOLDLY and DO NOT LIVE IN FEAR. Fear is their tool; perhaps their only one left...

15. And also you need to be prepared to sacrifice EVERYTHING!

Some wonder why they went through torturing Portman's character, and perhaps that explanation wasn't as good as it could have been. But it is a message that should hit us here in the U.S. that much more than anywhere else in the world, and is our biggest challenge.

Being a country that hasn't had as significant domestic struggle, revolution, invasion, etc. over the last century as other countries, we don't have many people here that are willing to sacrifice their homes, their experience that civil discourse with many living around them that they've had in the past with our system of Democracy and freedom. It will be a hard choice for many to face here. Other countries like Ukraine have had pasts (the Russian Revolution, the Soviet Union fall, etc.) where they know when "the chips are down" and when the time is upon them where they do need to risk everything to do things like surrounding their capitol until they had their election results corrected, when their political processes were being abused. We're not ready for that yet, but we need to be soon. I think we need to be ready in November this year, if Diebold, etc. has been used against us again then!

It's one thing to overcome fear. It's another to put aside all that you have valued in the past, if you feel the ultimate sacrifice may be needed soon. The hope I have is that those vets coming back from Iraq will have gone through this experience of sacrifice much more than the rest of us have, and perhaps some amongst the "Fighting Dems" will be those that help lead us to this time of sacrifice, if it's needed!
