No identity card? You could be fined £2,500
Town hall bureaucrats are to be given sweeping new powers to investigate homes for identity card evasion and to impose heavy fines on occupants found without one.

The revelation, in an obscure Whitehall consultation paper, calls into serious doubt the Government's repeated promises that planned ID cards, already hugely controversial, will be voluntary and that no one will be forced to carry one.

Those who fail to register for an ID card could be fined up to £2,500
It will stiffen resolve at Westminster to oppose the Identity Cards Bill, which is due before the Lords again next week.

Peers are already vowing to water down the plans to ensure that registration for cards is voluntary. At present the Bill requires people to submit their details to a new national ID Card Database when they apply for a passport, in effect making registration compulsory.

7. We have kinder, gentler fascists in this New American Century
They will at least say 'Please' and 'Thank you' after they kick in your front door.

Just remember -- it's for your own good!

3. So much for a voluntary system
The ID card movement here in the UK is a bit of a joke to begin with. No one has yet been able to come up with a good reason as to why we should have them yet they're being forced down our throats with draconian legislation like this.

4. You don't suspect ulterior motives do you? I wonder what a national
ID registry could be used for? :sarcasm:

9. I wonder....
I mean it isn't as if they could be used to track your movements and habits to build a profile of you is it.

Oh, hang on.

The ID card system that has been proposed will create a large audit trail of all your activity throughout your daily life. Deviate from your normal activities and you'll probably generate a flag on the system for greater surveillance.

The idea that the system won't be abused is laughable.

13. Uk has already decided that RF linked car license plates are
good for their population - in order to "keep the crime rates down" - there are literally hundreds of cameras in London and local environs for the same "reason".

UK is already more of a police state than the US - the US is eager to follow suit..
