1. He wanted to talk about Bush and DeLay -- McCain ate up his time

6. exactly what I thought!
He deserved a whole hour, and I found myself resenting the other bits and the commercial breaks. That "deaf as a post" comment -- wonderful!

7. Never Actually Heard the Great Studs Terkel Here (This Program)
The interview was kind of a disappointment: too short, way at the end, and, most of all, because this Jon Stewart is such a superficial, yuck-it-up asshole who directed the whole conversation to the most ordinary trivia. Who the hell did this stupid prick think these questions were being asked of? This is why I never watch that "Daily Show"--until the Studs Terkel episode: all-male cast and writers, stupid, time-wasting shit, visual crap, prick "humor," etc. I wanted to hear the great Studs Terkel blast Bush, Cheney (ONE QUESTION on the drunken Cheney firing away with a shotgun, please--you have the great Studs Terkel there; let's hear it), and the Republican/rich capitalist destruction of our democracy. I wanted to hear about Terkel's career, from all the great books and radio interviews to working with Ken Burns on the PBS documentaries, etc., the Chicago Historical Society, WPA, etc.

What a waste; that Stewart is such a third-rate fuck-up. We missed a chance at a real response to these Republican bastards, although the few quick comments at the end, where Terkel was asking to be able to talk about Bush, were worth the whole interview up to then. This great generation doesn't fuck around, and knows how to fight, how to cut these assholes like Bush, Cheney, and all the rest, right down to size with no fanfare--like the great Lauren Bacall and others who are real, American, New Deal Democrats.

11. If Jon Stewart is considered a fuck-up, we're in trouble.
He's easily one of the smartest comedians out there.

The reason he didn't ask Terkel the questions you wanted him to is because it's a comedy show. If you want to see Terkel answer serious questions, there are plenty of other venues for him to do so.

And neither the cast nor the writers nor the crew are all-male:

In fact, the show was created by a woman.

9. Studs Terkel once held a bus for me
:D

I was a young secretary racing for my bus home. It was just about to close its doors and pull away. Studs was waiting at the corner for the light to change and saw me running, so he held the doors open till I got there. I yelled "Thanks, Studs!" and jumped on.

:loveya:

OTOH I know someone who he interviewed for "Working." She said he was an asshole and twisted around what she told him.

But she drinks alot.

10. Phil Donahue
had Studs Terkel on--Studs got the whole hour--Phil asked him about McCarthyism and some of Stud's life experiences. It was a fascinating hour. Too bad Phil Donahue is not on anymore. :(

12. Studs is a treasure and Jon did treat him with respect.
He just needed much much more time. We don't know how much longer Studs will be around. For G-d sakes at least give him as much time as they give mccain who they have on 4 times a year.

I do get irritated with Jon Stewart when he complains about the repubs being the white boy party when all the "reporters" on his show are white boys.

BTW at http://www.studsterkel.org/ghits.php you can download a clip of Studs interviewing passengers on a train going from Chicago to D.C. in 1963 for the civil rights March On Washington and hear people's hopes and dreams.
