New Zogby Poll: Americans are pro-life on numerous abortion issues
In a survey of 30,117 respondents in 48 states conducted March 10-14 with a small .6% margin of error--"The poll found Americans support every pro-life law considered on the state and national level and believe life begins at conception."

* Looking at abortion itself, Americans were split on whether the Constitution allows a right to abortion with 46% agreeing and 45% saying no.

* But 59% agree that abortion ends a human life while only 29% disagree. Also, 50% of Americans believe life begins at conception while just 19% say life begins at birth.

* 71% of voters disagreed that the Senate should confirm only "pro-abortion" justices while just 17% agreed.

* Only 28% agree with using the filibuster to stop Supreme Court nominees because of their position on abortion, 59% opposed it.

* 69% agree with prohibiting federal taxpayer funds from being used to pay for abortions.

* When asked differently, 51% oppose federal or state funding of abortions for poor women while 37% support it.

* 56% want a 24-hour waiting period on abortion while 37% do not.

* Requiring women considering an abortion to undergo pregnancy counseling beforehand is favored by 55%

All in all, a very disappointing result, imo. It seems Americans are getting much more conservative on the abortion issue.

1. For what it's worth
I am regularly asked to take Zogby polls, but I wasn't asked to take this particular poll. I know other DUers do Zogby polls as well; it might be interesting to find out how many of them took this particular poll.

wrong people.

23. Zoby conducts polling in several ways
They conduct polls in door-to-door method, yes, door-to-door. Also by phone and by internet. Sometimes, they combine the methods.

4. I hope that they would also oppose the death penalty...
and be more skeptical of war. It is hypocritical to say that abortion kills and we should curtail the act but then be so willing to go to war and kill people.

6. Women will be imprisoned for getting an abortion
I'd like to see a pollster ask how many years in prison should a women spend for "murdering" her "unborn" child. If abortion is "murder", America needs to start discussing the appropriate prison terms and death penalty. Many lifers refuse to discuss this aspect of the debate because even THEY bristle at putting women in prison, which makes them hypocrites.

18. I'd like to see a poll asking women only......
these same questions. In my opinion, any man (of which I am one) has no business telling a woman what she can or cannot do with her body. Men's opinions shouldn't even count in this matter.

9. I'd like to see a poll asking if people consider themselves "pro-death"
God, I hate that term - "pro-life"! As if anyone who believes that a woman has a right to terminate her own pregnancy is pro-death. Is anyone, other than the war-mongers in the Bush administration, pro-death? :puke:

10. OK, for the 59% who say it "ends a human life"...
then they could ONLY support 'health of the mother' as a reason for an abortion and would have to SUPPORT forced pregnancy for rape and incest.

Unless, of course, their objective is to punish women.

11. Other polls have shown a clear (not massive but respectible) majority...
support a woman's right to choose. What is the methodology of this poll? Also, Zogby polls are not as accurate as they used to be.

14. I took this poll, I wasn't pleased with the phrasing of the questions
I felt like I was being pushed to make anti-abortion responses. It's difficult to demonstrate with out the questions on hand, but choosing reasonable responses (the type 'reasonable' people like to make) slanted the numbers to the anti-abortion position. It's also possible that I was selected because I'm in Utah and they were fishing for the stereotypical Utahan response. (But I'm not sure if Zogby tracks location, every other pollster does though) For what it's worth, I found the poll offensive and gave more rabid pro-choice responses than I normally would have.

19. I think you may be right.........
Zogby, looking for it's desired outcome, worded the questions is a way that made it difficult to have any other outcome. And it would be nice to know if this poll was commissioned by some Reich-Wing group looking for ammunition against pro-choice groups.

17. New ClintonTyree poll.........
Edited on Tue Apr-04-06 02:59 PM by ClintonTyree
67% of Americans are slack-jawed, mouth breathing, booger eating morons. Over 90% believe in some grumpy, vindictive, self absorbed cloud being that will smite them if they don't sing his praises 24-7. 49% think Republicans are more closely aligned with their twisted, outdated, asinine "values". 100% of those polled in the ClitnonTyree household think a majority of people are morons that like to be told what to do because they're too damned intellectually lazy to research and form opinions of their own.

Of course, these results are not scientific and the margin of error is + or - .00000001. :)

edited to reduce the margin of error!

21. a stupid analysis

You cannot write an valid analysis of this issue without the largest framing number: ~60% of the people polled want Roe and the right to abortion to be preserved. 25-35% want an overturn.

Yes, most average people don't want abortion to be something done easily and lightly. We already knew that.

No, America is not getting more conservative on this or anything else. These past 8 or 9 months the polling on retaining vs overturning Roe went from 48/44 to at least 56/35 and up to 60/35. Some polling shows hardcore desire to overturn Roe at 25% and about 10% with softer desire for that. The numbers Zogby has shows people shifting from "I want Roe overturned, that would make the issue go away" to "I don't actually want Roe overturned now that I've considered it again, but I don't want abortion to be easy".

27. Most Of It Makes Sense. Most People I Know Feel Those Ways Too.
There weren't questions as to whether it should be strictly illegal or not, which are the ones that generally show a majority agreeing that women should maintain the choice. But whenever the polls ask explicitly in terms of like above, such as when life starts or if abortion ends a human life, they usually come out with the majority siding with pro-life. I agree with a lot of the poll answers, but I also think women should have the right to choose. So that alone shows that the poll above does not reflect the opinions on whether or not it should be deemed illegal, just that most people think a fetus is more than just a clump of cells (as do I)
