5. Yup
They're starting with government employees now and I'm not sure when they are moving it to general production. I wanted to renew and make sure my family has theirs before that.

3. I dont know but I do know that after december of this year, we
will not be able to go to mexico or canada without a passport. not even the caribbean.

The State Dept. began issuing "e-passports" this February as part of a pilot program. They are planning to include the "e-passport" technology into passports for the general public this summer. Each e-passport has an RFID chip embedded in the back cover. I'd say get your passport now, before it's rolled out this summer.
