Costs Soar As Clergy Sex Abuse Cases Rise

New figures released Thursday by the nation's Roman Catholic bishops show the unrelenting toll of the clergy sex abuse crisis: 783 new credible claims last year, most of which date back decades, and costs of nearly $467 million.

The abuse problem was already known to have cost dioceses more than $1 billion since 1950, including some expenses paid last year. Still, Teresa Kettelkamp, director of the bishops' Office of Child and Youth Protection, said the total abuse-related expenses shelled out in 2005 were likely the largest ever for a single year.

The total number of accusations against Catholic clergy now stands at more than 12,000 since 1950.

1. Will South Carolina's proposed death penalty apply to them, too?
Isn't it strange that the biggest proponents of war and death penalties call themselves pro-life?

6. In retrospect, it would have been cheaper to include Hookers

as a perk for priests , than to pay all these lawsuits years later..:sarcasm:

NOT:sarcasm:

The TIME has long past to get the church into modernity and allow-CONDONE married priests. When you demand celibacy, you automatically open the field up to lots of folks with some pretty hefty psychological issues..

7. You know, any other organization with this kind of track record
would be run out of every city and town by torch wielding, angry mobs.

9. The Catholic Church disgusts me.
This molesting business, the abortion crap, implicit & overt support of the bush presidential campaign, nazi youth Pope, I wouldn't go near there anymore.

10. Large Numbers of Schools and Churches Closing
There are plentiful reports throughout the country of Catholic Schools and Parishes closing, particularly in cities such as Boston, New York and Philadelphia. Part of the reason is that the Church promised that weekly giving would not be diverted to pay for sex abuse settlements. One of the main ways they can raise cash is by selling real estate. Also, the expenses leave little spare cash from the diocese to subsidize inner city Catholic schools.
