I worked in Egypt, in the south, Akhmim, where girls over puberty covered themselves completely when in the streets with a black blanket nicely draped. They just looked out thru a vertical opening they left in order to see. We westerners were not expected to wear this, but the times and Egypt were not fanatical when I was there.

The streets were narrow and men sat on either side.

I came to understand that this black covering meant freedom for them to walk in the street, to shop. Until other things change, let them be covered if they want.

Do you know if Jill always wore the head covering? I think it is not important in itself, but may well be an effort to adapt to the people she lived with That and modest dress was no doubt a protection during imprisonment.
