I've seen Mark Warner a few times and he does that too. Harry Reid and the others do as well. Even when John Murtha and Jim Moran had their town hall meeting earlier this week John was leaving and he stopped to say hi and take some pictures even though he was in a obvious hurry. I have this great video from the 2000 convention of Al Gore and he's showing this guy around his Nashville place and he's so funny and down to earth and his whole family is.

Bush is a nasty little man in private but in public he's an actor. He's funny, outgoing, seemingly a great guy who loves his little hardscrabble ranch--a real man's man. It's easy to be taken in.

Kerry, by all accounts actually is a great guy. I know someone who knows someone who worked as a housekeeper for him and Teresa. Naturally, we were interested in hearing dirt, the problem was--there was none. Zero, zip nada. The Kerry's were wonderful people to work for, period.

What is it about getting the Democratic nomination for president that has turned every recent candidate--except Bill Clinton who's larger than life--into a caricature of a stiff, uncaring, elitist snob incapable of human emotion. It happened to Dukakis, it happened to Gore and it happned to Kerry.

Is it the media which exaggerates every little gaffe that a Democrat makes?

Is it the way the Democrats manage their campeigns and their candidates?

Is it that Democrats tend to prefer rather low key personalities as their candidates (Clinton excepted) and that these personalities come off poorly in comparision with Republican candidates who know that their public personas are a mask?

I'd love to know the answer. In the meantime, I'm looking for a larger than life candidate for 2008.
