I got a call from my local paper regarding my LTTE, but I am confused
They asked me what the letter was about, and then said that they would send it back to the editor in charge of such matters, and that if it is published, it will be published in the next few days.

I'm confused because other DUers have posted that they got a call about a LTTE, but they made it sound like they were sure it was going to be published. Do you think they will publish my letter?

Also, was asking me what the letter was about a test to see if I had really written it, or were they looking for a title to publish it under?

1. Normally if the paper calls that means it will be int the paper
Some papers call you to make sure you are who you say you are and that you wrote a LTTE.

My first published LTTE!

I wrote it after I read about that Bush had tried to justify warrantless physical searches. I opened with Bush's quote that this would be easier as a dictatorship, as long has he is the dictator. Then pointed out that he was being aided and abetted by a bootlicking Republican congress. I said that there would never be investigations of this or any other scandal with a Republican congress, and I ended with a call for censure and to vote Republicans out of power in November.

I didn't save the actual text, because I felt it was pretty pithy, but I'll post it when I see that they have published it.

2. IMO the paper was confirming you were the author and it will be published.

3. They call to verify the name and address on the letter
and having you confirm the content means yes, it's on its way to being published in the paper. They only call to verify the names on letters they do intend to publish.

I imagine they've run into problems in the past with right wing weasels writing poisonous garbage under a liberal neighbor's name and address.

8. They were making sure you weren't being set up
They probably had cases of someone sending in a radical letter with an enemy's name signed to it. You might have sent in a letter protesting the latest bond issue, and an enemy sent one in with your name urging the jailing of the mayor or something.

10. I was called recently.
Phone rings, I pick it up before the second ring.

"This is John"

"Is this John Doe?"

"Yes. This is John," I answered.

"We are calling from ______________, and want to confirm that you wrote this letter."

"What letter?"

"The letter you wrote to us."

"What letter did I write to you? I write a lot."

"We're calling to confirm that you wrote the letter, we're going to publish it."

"What letter did I write to you?"

"The letter is about censure."

I dont' recall what letter I wrote about censure. "What does the letter say?" I asked.

"Well, we are going to publish your letter if you wrote it. I'm calling to confirm that you wrote the letter."

"What does the letter say?" I asked again.

"Well, it's about censure."

"I write a lot of stuff, how am I supposed to tell you if I wrote something if I don't know what you're looking at? Can you read the letter so I can tell you if I wrote it?"

***

I'm certain I don't recall the conversation exactly as it occurred, but I swear it was almost absurd. Eventually, the caller did read me the letter, but she clearly didn't want to at first. I'm glad she consented to read it, cause if she hadn't, I couldn't have confirmed that I sent it.
