Poll question: CNN - Calf. pot candy company has been busted!
Edited on Fri Mar-17-06 10:52 AM by mdmc
They showed a bunch of candy bars and pop cans. They repeated the DEA line, "these products can be deadly if young children got a hold of them."

I don't know anymore info about this story. I am willing to bet that these products had no marijuana, and only traceable amounts of thc (from hemp or hemp seed).

Before I research, I would like to take bets-

15. These were clearly intended to get people high.
However, it looks like they were legal for medical marijuana purposes, per California State Law, which the Supreme Court has overruled, no?

The Google article makes it clear that these were active THC candy.

If you think Joe Camel marketing to kids is out of line, I don't see how one could not oppose this.

And I'm a legalization advocate.

THC candy is a great idea. They should legalize it, tax the shit out of it, and keep it away from kids.

14. I'm just the link provider
Though, according to the story the candies contained "trace elements" of mary-j-wana. However, there were a few thousand plants on the property. My guess is, this was the reason for the bust and the "pot -candy" angle is for the press:

"Drug agents searched two adjoining warehouses on Yerba Buena Avenue where the marijuana candy was produced. They also searched a warehouse on Adeline Street, Affolter's Lafayette home and 1740 Telegraph Ave. in Oakland, a location associated with the Compassionate Caregivers Club, a medical marijuana dispensary, authorities said.

During the raids, investigators seized about $100,000 in cash, between 4,000 and 5,000 marijuana plants, marijuana-growing equipment, three weapons and hundreds of sodas and candy laced with marijuana, Pena said..."

Hemp seed will create trace amounts of thc - but will never get you high. The pot brownies and such are thc based, and cause you to get high.

I bet these products were not able to get a person high.

without knowing anything more about this, I am betting that this candy company used hemp as an ingredient, and that NO cannabis was used in the creation of their products.

This is my prediction. Without any links, what do you think?

The non-fatal consumption of 3000 mg/kg A THC by the dog and monkey would be comparable to a 154-pound human eating approximately 46 pounds (21 kilograms) of 1%-marihuana or 10 pounds of 5% hashish at one time.

In addition, 92 mg/kg THC intravenously produced no fatalities in monkeys. These doses would be comparable to a 154-pound human smoking at one time almost three pounds (1.28 kg) of 1%-marihuana or 250,000 times the usual smoked dose and over a million times the minimal effective dose assuming 50% destruction of the THC by smoking.

It’s my anti-depressant. As a teenager they put me on all kinds of pills for my “depression”. They tried paxil, zoloft, and then when I almost lost it on the Zoloft they tried to make me take Prozac.. I went completely substance free until I was 21, when I smoked my first jay.

It also has powerful anit-nausea and pain relieving properties, as well as helping to keep an appetite, specifically in Cancer patients on Chemo (effects I’ve seen first hand). It also acts as an expectorant and will open the bronchial passageways, almost instantly, in the case of an asthma attack.

Think of how many great musicians and artists and writers have been high on the pot as well.

One of my best friends went over this very subject in her college psychology class, and they calculated to overdose on the mary jane, you would literally have to smoke 300 joints, all at once, in under 30 seconds.

When's the last time someone OD'd or killed someone cuz they had the Refer madness? There’s even evidence to suggest that as an expectorant, it helps to keep the lungs free of other alien tissue, one of the leading causes of lung cancer in cigarette smokers.

Not to mention you get to skip the awful sulphate rich fertilizers that make cigarettes radioactive.

Edited for clarity. :smoke:

Very high in the omegas. I use these on a daily basis on salads and in baking. I add them to pesto sauce instead of pine nuts where they add a nice texture. Even these legal hemp seeds are suspect by US government. BS.

Hemp is legal most places, and noone gets arrested for it.

22. Beer = American/Pot = UnAmerican
There are many variables to this debate of course, and although many would disagree that there is a major psychological component behind the gov's perpetual insistence of why pot is "bad," it's been my experience with lots of people that, on average, the influence of alcohol and its use as "social lube" was much more in keeping with qualities that favored the corporate/state, while pot culture was lumped in with different political strategies and smear tactics for what are obvious reasons to many, not so obvious to others.

25. thanks for your post
but it doesn't really work like that. The more that you eat, the more you feel "floaty". Eating (too much) thc does not give you the munchies, it gives you a floating, numbing, tingling feeling, similar to laughing gas.

The medical industries version of thc often caused people to pass out. It does not stimulate the appetite as well as pot.

The evil fuckers saw to it to have the masses embrace tobacco and alcohol, because those "taxable" drugs are a lot better for you...

The late Bill Hicks used to rail on this quite a bit - whenever you're at some gathering, some social function, and you encounter an obnoxious, belligerent, violent asshole, is he/she drunk or high? Exactly.

41. I am not familiar with these products
I have had hemp based candy but they were not these products and did not get me high. I don't think that someone would be stupid enough to produce and publically distribute edible products that would produce a high. Someone might do this. You never know. Some friends and I joked once about making "Happy Cheese" and selling it like other condimented cheese.
If the candy would have significant amounts of THC, it could be a bad psychological or even physical experience for someone. Eaten THC is not immediately absorbed, at least signifcantly. Someone who binged on this candy, not knowing what it was, could eat a lot of it before they are hit with the force of the effects. I would think that this would be harmful for young children, who may be very light weight and have different brain chemistry than adults.
I am for legalization, but if edible products with THC were produced they should be clearly labled so someone would know what to expect. Even if alcohol wasn't deadly when consumed in large amounts, someone who consumed 12 oz of alcoholic beverage thinking it was a wine cooler and turned about to be hard liquor might be disturbed by their experience just as if someone expected a light high from a product and ended up unable to walk.

42. Some ways pot candy can be deadly
Way Number One: Child eats whole box of pot candy. Child gets stoned. (Child couldn't HELP but get stoned after eating a whole box of pot candy!) Child gets munchies. Child enters refrigerator that's on the front porch looking for more food after cleaning out the kitchen, gets locked in refrigerator and suffocates. Autopsy results: Child died from anoxia induced by pot candy.

Way Number Two: Child eats whole box of pot candy. Child gets stoned. Child gets munchies. After eating all the food in the kitchen, child attempts to cross street in search of more food. Child trips on untied shoelace and his head is run over by war-wacky Operation Iraqi Liberation veteran who mistakes child for Old Iraqi Army soldier armed with AK-47 and RPG-7. Autopsy results: Child died from cranial compression induced by pot candy.

Way Number Three: Child eats whole box of pot candy. Child gets stoned. Child gets munchies. While child is busy eating all the food in the refrigerator, owner of now-empty box of pot candy enters kitchen to get a piece of pot candy, finds box empty, yells at child "Did you eat my whole fucking box of pot candy?" Child answers in the affirmative. Owner of empty box responds with "I'm gonna rip your fucking head off for doing that!" Owner really does rip child's fucking head off. Autopsy results: Child died from cranial detachment induced by pot candy.

Way Number Four, in which the child eats the pot candy and drops dead because of it without suffocating, serious accident or mom's pissed-off boyfriend, won't happen because pot isn't a lethal drug. OTOH, if we're talking about crack candy...

48. 10years ago at a party I saw a 9 year old eat 5 very strong brownies

I kept an eye on him cause his parents weren't. He was a very hyperactive child and an hour before he had been breaking things and was unable to set still. About an hour after he was setting in a lawn chair, with a stoned expression on his face and smiling. After about 3 hours he was asleep on a couch. I saw the kid several times in years after that and as far as I could tell he was the same hyper kid he always was.
