...ES&S. The war profiteering corporate news monopolies are vital to creating and maintaining the illusion that the Bush junta has support for robbing us blind and turning us all into slave labor and cannon fodder. But the mechanism of maintaining control has been the Bushite electronic voting machine corporations, who are now (as of 2004) tabulating all our votes with 'TRADE SECRET,' PROPRIETARY programming code, and virtually no audit/recount capability.
The two mechanisms for keeping this fascist junta in power--control of the vote tabulation, and control of the news monopolies--came together on election day 2004, when the news monopolies, acting in concert, DOCTORED their own exit polls (Kerry won) to "fit" the results of Diebold's and ES&S's secret vote tabulation software (Bush won), thus denying the American people major evidence of election fraud, and squelching protests and calls for investigation.
We cannot do anything about the news monopolies until we restore transparent elections. Our vote is our power, the mechanism of our sovereignty as a people. Without it, we have no say in government policy, including no say on the monopoly of our public airwaves by rightwing warmongers and war profiteers.
The illusion that Bush has majority support is quite devastating. It is created by their giving a big trumpet to rightwing views, way out of proportion to their numbers. (I've done some study of this, and support for Bush policy in the issue polls has been running at 30% to 40% for more than two years. The American people overwhelmingly oppose Bush policy.) This illusion of Bush support--because of the deluge of rightwing views and rightwing-tailored news--makes the great progressive majority in this country feel like they are in the minority, and makes members of this great majority feel isolated and alone.
But the only thing we can do about this, really--in the absence of transparent elections--is to WAKE UP FROM THIS MEDIA DELUSION. Disconnect from it. Seek alternative news and views. And help others wake up.
Our most pressing task, however, is to restore transparent elections. It is a practical and doable task. Russ Holt's HR 550 is a Congressional bill that would greatly help. (Among other things, it bans undisclosed software.) It has 169 co-sponsors. But I don't know if it can be passed any time soon, with the Bushite majority in Congress, even a majority crippled by scandal. We shall see. Meanwhile, we need to support and create grass roots movements in every state and county, demanding complete transparency in our election system.
Grass roots groups in California, New York, Florida, North Carolina, and other states have mounted major efforts on election reform, and are winning victories. I don't have urls to all those efforts, but here are some information resources:

One other thing people can do is to demand that the Democratic Party fund INDEPENDENT exit polls in 2006/08. Write to Howard Dean. We are facing a situation in 2006 of a non-transparent and fraudulent election SYSTEM, with no election verification tools. The news monopoly exit polls cannot be trusted. Independent exit polls are desperately needed--to gather evidence, and to mount challenges of suspicious results.
