Port Security is the issue to focus on. It seems to me that Bush is trying to set up a terrorist attack for the 08 Selection. thats why the UAE backed out, So we don't figure out that our port security sucks. and then when it actually happens, Bush will just say "no one could have imagined" just like 9-11 and Katrina. This is such bull shit it's astounding.

Edited for this:

its 21 ports not just terminals check here:

2. I think it's 21 TERMINALS in six ports
I'm not at all certain of this...I think it is what I heard today on NPR. Haven't fact-checked it yet.

3. Not sure, but I think it's 6 ports and 21 docks.
I read a lot about this the other day. It seems it's alomst a game of symantics. It's 6 ports, as in NY, NY Miami, etc, but there are many docks (or maybe they call them something else) in each port. That's the way I understand it anyway.

5. And that 2 of them handle all that Army gear from FT Hood.

For the Third & Fourth Armored Divisions. All that goes through Corpus Christi and Beaumont, two ports affected by the deal. Very important in that all of those M1 Abrams tanks and accompanying goodies could conceivably be stuck in Texas under a worst case scenario.

on edit: OP is correct 21 ports involved I know Corpus Christi & Beaumont definitely in play!

6. Right, but the port management outfit is legit and manages
ports around the world. The problem is as much xenophobia as it is a legitimate concern for security.

Yes, a terrorist could possibly infiltrate the government offices and a terrorist could possibly infiltrate the port management offices. However, the likeliest way to get suspect cargo in would be to bribe people on the ground in the ports, themselves. A bigger concern would be the company completely fouling up port operations in retaliation for more stupidity in the middle east. That part I can see. The terrorist threat is something I'm having trouble with.

Clearly, this administration has not taken container port security seriously, at all, to the point that I'd be surprised to learn that an aging suitcase nuke has NOT been shipped into the US via container. Security has been piss poor for longer than Stupid has been in office, and the US has had terrorist enemies for even longer than that.

The problem with this deal has been the same problem from the beginning, the idea that not only should port operations be privatized away from the states, they should be offshored anywhere. This deal was the first time Joe Sixpack learned that P&O, a foreign company, had been managing "his" ports, and he quite correctly thinks this is not a good idea for a country that has found itself under attack in the past 5 years and is running out of friends worldwide.

I don't think he's going to be too thrilled if Halliburton gets the gig, either.

9. What's the port security like NOW, at this moment?
Aren't they in a kind of limbo right now? If people don't know who they're going to work for any more, are they paying serious attention to security at this moment?

Just curious.

10. Thats a great question. I've read that only 10% of the containers get
inspected. Deal or no deal, I think the UAE backing out is just a way to get the american people to move on and forget about the real issue which is port security, or a lack of.
