Some good letters in my local paper

This is my local weekly paper that has a pretty wide circulation in Eastern Connecticut, which is primarily represented by Rob Simmons (R), one of those races listed as competitive by both parties (Kerry won the district by 10 points in 2004, but Simmons won 54-46 or 53-47)

War Against Terror
Let me get this straight. Al Gore spoke at a conference in Saudi Arabia and said that the US was over-zealous after 9/11 and infringed on the due process rights of Arabs in the US. This makes him a traitor. On the other hand, George Bush is turning over control of ports in states that voted against him to an Arab country from which a number of the 9/11 terrorists came. This makes him a strong leader in the war against terror. Has George Orwell been writing the news recently?

Straight Shooter
George Bush ran for president in 2000 and was dubbed a "straight shooter" by the media. Lately, however, it seems Bush's own White House is disabusing us of this notion. In his State of the Union address, Bush said America is addicted to oil and vowed to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. The next day, Team Bush backed away from this statement saying that Bush didn't mean it literally, he was just using terms we could understand. The next week, after the intelligence community scoffed at Bush's tale of thwarted shoe bombers in airplanes over LA, Team Bush again said that the President didn't mean it literally. As evidenced by his authorizing the spying on American citizens without warrants, it seems we should also not have taken him literally when he promised to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

President Bush needs to finish up reading “My Favorite Goat” so that he can check out the next story. The one about placing the fox in charge of the hen house.

Another response. Violent Muslims? Under the direction of a born-again Christian fundamentalist commanderin chief, our military invaded a nearly defenseless Muslim nation, and has tortured hundreds and killed dozens of mostly Muslim prisoners, while others are locked up without a trial. During this time, a prominent Republican pundit called for our country to kill all the Muslim leaders and convert the masses to Christianity. It was only a few years ago that NATO troops went into southeastern Europe to stop the ethnic cleansing of Muslims. Earlier, the Cold War was the Christian West against the Godless Communists and before the Cold War, we had Adolph Hitler killing millions of Jews in the name of Christianity, while the Pope looked the other way. While Islam is far from perfect, Christianity does not exactly have a history as pure as Ivory Soap, either.
