33. I think you pick the correct word--Harshly
Under his term 9/11 happened, Katrina happened, He pursued a war against a nation which had nothing to do with 9/11 and lied to the country and world to involve us and them in this war. The surpluses he inherited turned to deficits. There is corruption in government and ethical lapses on par if not exceeded by Watergate and Tea Pot Dome. Poverty is rising in this country after decreasing over the past decade. Energy companies dictate our energy policies and the result are record gas and heating bills--while they enjoy record profits.

In short everything Bush has touched has turned to dust. He has been an utter disaster. It is hard to imagine any true independent historian 50 years down the line looking back at Bush's 8 years and finding anything worthy. He stole the presidency in 2000--that is a fact. He promised to be a "united, not a divider" and his entire presidency has been one of division. He "won" in 2004 amid wide-spread chrages of voter fraud.

He may not care about history but his children and their children will have to live with Bush, in all liklihood, being named an absolute failure--right where he belongs with Buchanan and Pierce--and their ineptitude which helped lead to the civil war. I just hope we will have a Lincoln who will come in after Bush and save the country.

10. ONE of the worst? No, single worst. And most dangerous. And not done.
With all due respect, Bush has set a new standard. And he is not yet finished. Reagan, Nixon, Buchanan, Tyler - Plenty bad ones. Even worse than bad. But this is a whole new low. It's not even about issues for BushBots any more (about 30% of the country - horrifying). The ports deal is the final nail in that coffin. It's not about national security, or tax cuts, or the environment anymore. It is now about are you with "the President," or against him? That's now the mantra on Fox News, Limbaugh, et al. It's all about Bush, as a symbol and rallying point for all. Easier to define it that way than issues, and it is working. I think Cheney's bad press has much to do with it, as well as the fact that the investigation into the Plame leak is getting much too close to the Veep's office. They are making it simple, therefore: Are you with our President, or are you a traitor? This is happening quickly. We are entering a whole new era, and the Rove talking points are being adjusted feverishly. Best girdle thy loins. We are in for a bumpy ride (one not quite anticipated to unfold like this even a month ago. Frightening).

Be sure to live long and prosper. Actually, Bush will "disappear," and the Corpse of Cheney is what will be worshipped. Rove, of course, will still be with us; but his photo will have aged to dust.

How naive can you be? There will be no history except as told by the victors. Buch Inc will write the history and he will be just fine thank you. Only second to Ronnie the RayGun and he was just ahead of JC, don't ja know.

Here I stand; I can do no other: George W. Bush is second to no one, and it's not even close, in being the most disastrous, dangerous and incoherent president in this nation's history. With all due respect for your opinion, but remember: Reagan is gone. Bush and his handlers aren't through with us yet.

17. While I would love for him to face judgement in this lifetime....
I fear this will not happen. I am looking forward to his being judged by God. He is a pathological liar and has hurt untold hundreds of thousands. Some one once told me (and it had a ring of truth) that when you died, you felt the pain that you had caused others. I wouldn't want to be Bush if that is true. If Marley had to drag a huge chain in hell, what will Bush have in his hands. I don't want revenge, I just want justice.

21. As an Installed Failure
As his poll numbers hover around Nixonian levels, History will have to find a way of criticizing the Chimp while still validating the "American People" I think they'll do this by saying that he lost the Popular Vote in EVERY bio of the Chimp, even blurbs, in much the same way that Benjamin Harrison's most notable accomplishment was winning the EC and losing the Popular Vote. They will ALL note the 5-4 Supreme Court Decision, along partisan lines, that installed teh Chimp. There will also be a lot made of the mess in Florida and the mess in Ohio. They will say that he tried to lead a narrowly divided nation without any regard towards the half of the US that didn't vote for him. Historians will label him as the most divisive President since Lincoln. The historians will make him out to be a puppet of Karl Rove. He'll be judged more harshly than Harding and the fact that his electoral "victories" were questionable at best will be writ large.....

The Tying Iraq to Terrorism will be seen as a cynical political ploy and that the Chimp and his gang did a far better job exploiting September 11 for political gain than preparing the nation for further disasters. If Bin Laden remains free until he dies of natural causes or the Chimp's term ends, that will also illustrate the failure of this Administration.

The camps we'll know so well.

He just started somethin' warlike - a war he failed to pitch.

Even Cheney's shootin' in Texas - maybe for Brokeback he'll switch.

Bewitched, bewitched, Rush Limbaugh is on board.

Bewitched, bewitched, the ports that show he's whored.

I think we should watch Diebold now on, as otherwise we can't lose.

We know we care for peace and clean air, Tweety and Russert we hope will be there,

But here on DU, for each other, we'll CAA-RRRE!

Endora and Granny were the greatest second bananas of the '60s, female. But Barney was the greatest second banana - ever (sorry, Ed Norton) - and I wax nostalgic and feel my mortality. Did you ever watch the Bewitched movie, with Nicole Kidman? I think we discussed it. Awful, and I told you so. And I wanted to love it so much. Going in for major surgery week after next; if I make it, I am moving to Maryland after that with the woman and her dogs and her cats I want to be with in this last stage, as I push 60. Keep in touch. If I don't make it, I expect you to post my little song about Bush; actually, I thought it was pretty good. And I always look for you, for shared values.

were gradually losing power..."

That is a line from a textbook I read this morning for a rhetoric class I'm taking. The section I'm reading is about Cicero, who was killed shortly after the Roman Republic became an Empire.

I can imagine future historians (assuming there are any) writing the same about the Bush era.

37. Define history. In the long term, he won't be judged at all
Edited on Thu Mar-02-06 06:05 PM by Freedom_Aflaim
Assuming that he leaves office on schedule in 2008, in 100 years he'll be a minor footnote. In 200 years, just a textbook listing. In 500 years totally forgotten.

Now if he refuses to leave in January of 2008, they'll he'll be infamous for more than a few centuries.

Its amazing what time erases. The average person couldnt name 10 world leaders who lived between 1000ad and 1900.

Really, you got to do some seriously heinous shit to be judged by long term history at all. As bad as Bush is for us today (and his effects over the next 50 years), he's small potatoes to some of historys real baddies.

Illegal Wiretapping

Illegal War

Incompetence all over

Katrina

September 11th

Stolen Elections

Not small potatoes in the whole scheme of things. Either way history will judge him as a horrible leader or the best thing since sliced bread.

40. Even with all those things.
Edited on Thu Mar-02-06 06:52 PM by Freedom_Aflaim
But its depends on the period of time you are looking at.

Today, everything you listed is serious shit and affects us all.

Children born today will never realize how incompetant he is. They will study in history class about the "election controversy", but won't have any emotion about who was right. In 50 years, Katrina will be remembered as the really bad hurricane that swamped L.A and the Fema response will be largely forgotten.

In 200 years the details of 9/11 won't be common knowledge, but will proably be studied in history class. The other items will be forgotten totally.

Even the Iraq war. Theres quite a few folks who agree that its an illegal war, but virtually every war in history has been a war of aggression from one side, i.e. an illegal war. Shit even the American revolution was an illegal war from the view of the British at that time.

Now don't misunderstand. Im not condoning the Iraq war. Far from it. But from an historical perspective (and thats what this thread is about), its a rather minor war.

Now does all that negate the seriousness of the issues we face today? Of course not. We are not trying to fight WW II, we are trying to end Gulf War II - an illegal war started by US! Folks in L.A. are still homeless today and people are being illegally wiretapped.
