So I got a letter from the FCC today.
I sent a complaint about the O'Reilly Factor after he made those comments on TV about threatening to blow up San Fransisco.

Here's the comment in question:

Hey, you know, if you want to ban military recruiting, fine, but I'm not going to give you another nickel of federal money. You know, if I'm the president of the United States, I walk right into Union Square, I set up my little presidential podium, and I say, "Listen, citizens of San Francisco, if you vote against military recruiting, you're not going to get another nickel in federal funds. Fine. You want to be your own country? Go right ahead.

And if Al Qaeda comes in here and blows you up, we're not going to do anything about it. We're going to say, look, every other place in America is off limits to you, except San Francisco. You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead.

I get home and there's a letter from the FCC in my mailbox. And guess what - my request for an evaluation, which took six months after the intial air date -

DENIED!!!!!!!!!

So a woman flashes her nipples on the Super Bowl and she gets a $750,000 fine. A guy makes a comment about blowing up an American city on national television - nothing happens!

1. Why are you surprised?
Please. It's the same reason why Ann Coulter is allowed to go on tv and say she'd like to blow up the NYTimes and all those people.

3. O'Reilly's on cable, right? Not broadcast? That's the difference
Broadcasters use the airwaves FREE and are thus under the eye of the FCC rules-you PAY for cable and you can cancel is you don't like it.

4. If O'Reilly said he would blow up San Francisco, you have grounds, but...
Edited on Fri Feb-24-06 08:39 PM by Selatius
he used "Al Qaeda" instead of himself as the example. It's objectionable, but it's not finable in my view.

If he encouraged people to blow up San Francisco, that's also something that would stick, but he hasn't encouraged violence in this example, so he can't be fined. He knows what he can do or can't do, so he will come as close to the line as possible without going over.

The fact is no matter how objectionable O'Reilly believes San Francisco's decision is, he is in no position to deny the city protection, nor is the federal government in a position. Why? Because San Franciscans pay the same federal taxes everybody else pays.

Withdrawing protection is akin to taxation without representation, which was the main reason the several Colonies withdrew from the British Empire.

6. He encourages violence every day.
Every time I either see his billboards, I want to tear them down.

Every time I see him on TV, I want to throw my TV off the roof. Like this: :argh:

7. 42,190 complaints during the Super Bowl period for
Indecency and Obscenity verses 1375 previous month.

Logical conclusion: People were a lot more upset with seeing a boobie than hearing Big Mouth O'Riley blather on about SF.

10. I just shredded mine.
Of course, had they prompted an investigation, I'd take it down to Aaron Bros. and have the thing framed.
