What are the top ten 10 Election Reform & Fraud stories for 2005?
Edited on Sat Dec-31-05 10:22 AM by FogerRox
Please nominate 2 or 3 of what you think are the Top Ten Election Reform & Fraud stories for 2005. Please try to provide links for the stories you pick.

Later this afternoon I'll pick the top ten, add them to the Election Reform Daily thread, found here-

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=203x407036

I like these 3-

-Washington state lawyers sue Sequoia Voting systems

-Harri Hursti hacks Diebold opscan in Leon COunty

-Diebold driven out of North Carolina by NC voter

I'll be by later to add links to my nominations as soon as I find them.

Happy New Year

1. Diebold driven out of North Carolina by NC voter
I love that one.

I think all the Diebold rejection stories are excellent.

May 2006 bring about the end of Diebold and their like-minded (evil, cheating) competitors.

6. My two favorites are
The Conyers report and Barbara Boxer formally objecting to the Ohio vote, with the ensuing debate (but not counting the continually repeated asshole talking points by the Repukes).

They both set shining examples for their colleagues in their respective houses of Congress.

9. Top Story--The High Quality of Exit Poll Analysis which Draws Naysayers
Edited on Sat Dec-31-05 06:16 PM by autorank
1. The Exit Polls on DU (we should all be proud)

Here's the whole listing of Exit Poll Stories from TIA: www.truthisall.net

In addition, the kick off was from our own "althecat" (of Scoop) and Jonathan Simon (at that time of VerifiedVoting.Org) in "Scoop" Independent Media:

http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL0411/S00142.htm

and althecat's compendium thread

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=203&topic_id=44423

Why are they my favorites? Think about it. What other posts on DU consistently draw the same and often new posters to attack the thesis. The proportion of time your opponents devote to a particular argument, IMHO, indicates your strength. If it were not a strength, after all, they'd just ignore it.

2. The "Boxer Rebellion" refusing to certify Ohio (plus support in the debate by Reid and others) and the small but soulful march to the Capitol in DC preceding that vote.

11. Bradblog's interviews with Dieb-Throat,
Edited on Sat Dec-31-05 07:14 PM by Liberty Belle
as well as the others already mentioned.

The Hursti hack in Florida may well have the most signiificant long-term results, if it continues to persuade other ROVs to give Diebold the boot.

Another very important (albeit negative) story is the Ohio Nov. '05 election results, in which outcomes on election reform initiatives flopped up to 40% from exit polls--strongly indicating fraud.

Also CA refusing (so far) to recertify Diebold touchscreens and activists' battle for open hearings.

How about that shareholder lawsuit just filed against Diebold, alleging concerns over security of the voting machines has tanked the company's stock? That might have a chilling effect on other would-be election thieves at competing firms.

12. Here's the best: "American Coup II" in "Scoop"
Now I can go celebrate the new year. I had this nagging feeling that I'd forgotten THE big story:

AMERICAN COUP II - 1999-2005

This has it all from Mark Crispin Miller to Bob Fitrakis to John Gideon, etc. etc.

It is "the" essential recource.

Elections Supervisor: Some Diebold Voting Machines Can Be Hacked
POSTED: 11:31 am EST December 15, 2005
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Leon County's elections supervisor says some Diebold voting machines used in Florida can be hacked.
Ion Sancho said tests show an insider could secretly change election results and the number of ballots cast on Diebold's optical-scan machines.
The Miami Herald reports that Sancho is scrapping Leon's Diebold machines for a system made by Election Systems and Software.
Diebold, which has been criticized for its connections to President George W. Bush, has disputed the test results.
Diebold spokesman David Bear hasn't returned a phone call from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Number 4:
Washington state lawyers sue Sequoia Voting systems- Nominated by FogerRox.

Brought to you by Land Shark, reported by Brad Blog-

An electronic voting machine maker is battling a voter rights advocate in Washington state who wants to force the company to reveal the machines' software blueprint.

Paul Lehto, an Everett, Washington, lawyer has filed suit against Sequoia Voting Systems Inc., a privately held company based in Oakland, California, and Snohomish County, where his practice is located, arguing Sequoia's contract should be voided.

The lawsuit, filed last week in King County Superior Court, pits the right of a company to guard proprietary information against the public's need to know how elections are tabulated, Lehto said.

''These are entities that are providing the most central governmental function that we have, the counting of the vote,'' Lehto said Tuesday. ''If they are not only controlling that process but purporting to own it, then that is a serious problem.'

5)Diebold driven out of North Carolina by NC voter

Number 6:
Andy Stephenson- Nominated by demodonkey.
Andy sent me a PM, asking me to call him, back on may 23rd. He wanted to talk to me about the voting machines proposed for my county in NJ. To make sure I was headed in the right direction. IIRC, the next night he went in for surgery. I still have his number asved on my cell. About a month later Andy passed. Complications from his surgery.
Andy had run for Secretary of State in Washington, and lost. He also worked with Bev Harris. Here is what may be his last post at DU:

Keating concedes election

By Eric Harkreader, December 13, 2005

snip

Early results wrong

The recount is the latest chapter in a race that seemed to end quietly on election night, when Keating was named the unofficial winner by nearly 200 votes.

However, a programming error by the county’s ES&S voting machines awarded all votes by Democrats casting a straight-ticket ballot to Keating. The problem involved a software coding error in which Keating’s political affiliation was mislabeled as Democrat.

Recount

By John Hilton, Nov 10, 2005

“As they were getting the counts in on election night, we had a couple people watching the monitors and somebody noticed Kathy Keating coming in as a ‘D,’” Eichelberger says. “We knew right away that we needed to be looking at something there.”
