"Keep going Letterman, bring more souless bastards on your show and put them in the hotseat. Remember one thing, (nobody ever follows up with this) When they say "... thought that there were WMD,...thought that there were WMD...Thought that there were WMD." RESPONSE...NONE of them initiated BOMBING Iraq based on that FLAWED info, now did they? No, only the U.S. (superpower) used flawed information as justification for bombing the hell out of a 3rd world country killing thousands of innocent civilians. Hmmm, kind of make you wonder, just alittle bit?"

Great job against O'liely tonight. Don't listen to those who are upset and sending in hate mail right now (if they are). They are just upset that reality is closing in on them. By the way, you are right, he WAS MAKING UP the thing about the school with the colors. That school has since complained that O'liely made the whole thing up. Same thing with the school with "Silent Night". They replaced that song with another song with "Christmas" in the title. He is a lier.

Good Job!

I can't believe anyone would watch that and think it was agood interview.

To each his own I guess.

I just thought he was hostile. So why invite someone on the show if you dislike him so much?

To challenge him publicly?

Then at least get yourself informed. Geeze. I thought hew looked like a spoiled ass and there aren't many times when o'Reilly's in the room that someone else looks like a spoiled ass.

but I don't like it isn't hostile?

To say I'm not smart enough to debate you but I bet 60 % of what you say is crap isn't hostile?

What would you call it?

Beavis-like maybe?

Right at the beginning O'Reilly had one of his anti-Christmas stories ready to go and Dave said that's just one example. He was just arguing with his guest right from the beginning. hen O'Reilly said he had more examples and Dave said he was bored with them.

You don't see that as a hostile interview?

73. That's true
Dave can get away with pretty much anything. It's his show.

Is that what he's trying to do? Get away with stuff?

If he was trying to conduct a good interview, he failed miserably. He was insulting to his guest and he was admittedly uninformed.

And I don't know why you said O'Reilly lost. He got just waht he wanted. He got fodder for his show, his books, his radio program. That's what he wants and that's what he got.

O'Reilly will come away with stuff for his fans... all twelve of them. (He does have family you know.)
Seriously, it will not help him a great deal. At best he'll whip up his more rabid and woefully lobotomized fanbase, and at worst he's lost fans that will defer to their long-time following and respect of Letterman.

For Bill very little was gained, and Dave got to point out that O'Reilly is a callous and shallow bastard.

Not Dave's best moment, as I said, he could have dressed him down and made him look like a total idiot very easily (like he's done with so many before).

{found it}
On Letterman’s show, Limbaugh said how Hillary Clinton looked “like a hood ornament on a Pontiac.” An annoyed Letterman shot back, “And you can say that because you are the finest looking human specimen on the planet?” The audience erupted in laughter and applause.

-SMACK!-

With his wit he could have carved O'Reilly up but good.

It was a bit flat for Dave to outright call someone full of shit, he usually makes them eat it with a smile.

I also consider this something of a commentary on just how 'close to the surface' tension is becoming. Hopefully America will slap itself awake.

I see Daves "not as smart as you" as sarcasm, as in... your dumb.. and full of crap! THAT how I read it.. like listening to Franken, the self deprication is used in reflection upon the other. '

I was reading down these posts and see your string of complaints, now.. if this was a serious interview it woulda been weak, but this was a late night comedy show, and Dave felt the seriousness other propaganda and the war on lies is too much for him to not speak to! THAT is the undercurrent!

28. Why it was a trainwreck
First because Dave was hostile right from the beginning.

Fine I thought. A little weird for a comedy show, but I guess Dave brought Bill on to challenge him. Questionable taste to invite someone on your show just to be hostile to him, but anyway, whatever.

But then it turns out Dave is completely uninformed and unprepared.

Just to paraphrase the two most ridiclous parts Dave said.

1. I'm not smart enough to debate you but I think 60 % of what you say is crap.

2. I've never seen your show but I bet it's no good.

I'm sure many on DU laughed uproariuosly when Dave said those things, but please realize just how stupid they are.

If you're going to challenge someone, at least get yourself informed first.

I didn't think it was funny and it sure didn't make Dave look good or O'Reilly look bad.

It was just a Dave trainwreck.

41. I Respectfully Disagree
I'm fairly sure O' LIElly had some idea what could happen. He knows Letterman's political views, so why would he come on the show in the first place? At least Dave admitted he needed to know more. Bill would have NEVER done that.

50. I'm assuming O'Reilly went on the show for one of two reasons
1. He's got a book or something else to sell, or

2. Because he knows Dave will act like Beavis and Butthead and give O'Reilly another six-months worth of examples of how he's not treated fairly. He sure succeeded in that.

The bigger question is why would Dave invite him on the show?

The only thing I can think of is he wanted to express his own political views by inviting someone opposed to him so that he could publicly insult him on network TV. I'd call that an abuse of his discretion. Would you?

Like when your team clotheslines the opposing quarterback after the play's been blown dead.

Heck, you're a fan. You can cheer against the opposing quarterback. That's fine.

But it would hardly be a great football play.

I can understand people saying "did you see Letterman? He said he didn't know squat but still thought O'Reilly's full of shit !!" Okay, cheer away for the home team, but a great interview?

Hardly.

120. You know Bill has been so awful to so many people on HIS show
that it was just perfect to be invited onto a show and to be insulted. Now, maybe Bill has an inkling on how it feels to be attacked for your views.

David challenged him and put him in a position that Bill is not used to being in. I think that David did the right thing. He was totally appropriate and I wish that more people with views against the administration and war would do the same. To see someone have a spine with blowhards like Bill and catch him off gaurd is EXACTLY what we need to see more of.

60. I see your point, but...
The Late Show never claimed or pretended to be a forum for political debate. It's an entertainment show, and I found Letterman slapping O'Reilly around entertaining.

Letterman admitted that he couldn't debate him point by point, and that's fine in my book. Leave that to people like Al Franken.

63. I agree -- leave that to people
like Al Franken. He will take O'Reilly apart point by point. I know many DU'ers don't like Franken, but I like his interview style. He goes point by point with his guests. You can tell he's very, very well prepared.

So why the f^%k is Dave having O'Reilly on if he's just going to insult him, and he insulted him right from the first minute of the interview and kept it up through the whole segment.

The Late Show is not a forum for political debate. So what's Dave doing then?

Did he just want to have him on to publicly insult him? That's what it looked like to me, and regardless of sides, that's a pretty sorry abuse of his discretion in my opinion.

I don't like this guy. I think I'll have him on my show and insult him. And then to say he's never seen his show. Jeepers.

Edited on Wed Jan-04-06 03:51 PM by Rob H.
...specifically with regard to #2.

Here's the exchange you've referenced. Note Dave's response when Bill asks Dave how he came to the conclusion that O'Reilly isn't objective.
Letterman: Yeah, but I think there’s something, this fair and balanced. I'm not sure that it's, I don't think that you represent an objective viewpoint.

O’Reilly: Well, you’re going to have to give me an example if you're going to make those claims.

Letterman: Well I don’t watch your show so that would be impossible.

O’Reilly: Then why would you come to that conclusion if you don't watch the program?

Letterman: Because of things that I’ve read, things that I know.

I've never seen O'Reilly's show, either, but based on things I've read (lots of postings at Media Matters for America, the book The Oh Really? Factor, postings here on DU--hell, just being informed about the news in general) I know that Bill isn't objective or unbiased, too. IMHO I don't think Letterman's sentiments regarding O'Reilly's very real lack of objectivity can be distilled down to, "I've never seen your show but I bet it's no good."

I completely agree with your assessment of Franken as an interview and radio host, though. He can be a bit pedantic at times, but I always feel that I've learned something I didn't know or learned more details about things I thought I knew a lot about whenever I've finished listening to his show. The fact that he has Joe Conason and David Brock as regular guests doesn't hurt, either. :)

Edited for shpelling.

because I think an interviewer saying he doesn't watch the show but thinks it sucks is not a great interview tactic.

Letterman insulted O'Reilly on network TV. Cheer on. That's what fans do.

But a great interview??

Seriously.

Turn it around.

Take some environmentalist professor and put him on O'Reilly's show. O'Reilly says "well doctor. You know I don't have a clue what you're doing with your study but I think you're full of shit."

And all of you all will be saying, "fine interview." "One of the best I've seen."

101. ok I watched it and you have a valid point
it would have been much better if Dave had been swift enough to bring up the office of special plans when bill started saying everyone thought he had wmd...

Dave was not in sharpest form, but I appreciate his effort anyway.

certainly not what i'd call a debate, but hey it's a comedy show.
peace to you.

106. I think O'Reilly Goofed when he called British Intelligence "M-1-6"
I've always heard Brit intelligence agency as MI 5. Perhaps there's a 6, but if so wouldn't that also be MI 6, not M-one-six.

If I'm wrong and he was referring to an agency I've never heard of, I'll stand corrected. But if I'm right, then somene should talke back O'Reilly's Peabody Award (with apologies to Al Franken).

One's domestic (like the fbi) and the other foreign (like the cia).

62. I'll tell you why
because I've already heard about the "Silent Night" story. Turns out the song was an adaptation from a PLAY, not the SCHOOL SYSTEM changing the lyrics to be politically correct. O'Liely refuses to back down, though, from disparaging that town and that school system.

Letterman is a very intelligent man. BillyBob is a crank two-bit shill for the Right. Dave no doubt knew the stories were bogus, but he can discredit O'Liely later. Instead, he saved his questions so as to go for the throat of a hate-filled pus-bag. Don't like it? Don't watch.

And "Abuse of discretion"? What planet do you live on? Dave is not a fucking journalist as O'Liely fashions himself. Dave is an ENTERTAINER.

said I've looked into that story and it turns out ...

then you'd be right.

But Dave didn't say that. He said very publicly, I don't know what I'm talking about but I think you're full of sh*t. What kind of an interview is that?

And entertainer? Was that supposed to be entertaining? He just had a political guy on an d insulted him. Is that entertaining?

Maybe if you hate the guy being insulted it is.

It just looked like a trainwreck to me.

79. Search my 8,000 posts
and I wonder if I ever wrote a single nice thing about O'Reilly.

It turns out I don't particularly like him at all.

Maybe it's because in my very younger days I was a newspaper reporter that I react negatively to such a horrible interview as this one was.

And I realize that Dave isn't a reporter. But he does invite people to come on his show. And they come on and talk about their book, their movie, their work, whatever. He shouldn't invite people on just to insult them, and maybe I'm wrong, but I felt he intended to insult him from the first minute and kept it up the whole segment.

121. I agree with Yupster.
I didn't see the entire interview, however, because I don't have TV service. I watched the ReelMedia clip, and, as much as I enjoyed it, I don't understand why everybody is busting a nut about this... Letterman can be such a prick when he wants to, but he seemed to be holding back with O'Lie-ly. I mean, saying that 60% of what he says is crap is passively implying that 40% of what he says isn't. And that's pretty fucking generous.

It was obvious that O'Reilly was on the defensive, so why didn't Dve just slaughter him? Maybe he didn't want to seem as much of a thug O'Reilly does when he has a guest with an opposing viewpoint.

But I would have torn him a new one, and then let Crispin Glover punch him in the cock.

And I remember Dave's afternoon show, too. Edie McClurg was a regular who did a cooking segment ("Today I'm going to show you how to make a three bean salad with only two beans and one magic marker...), and they would go into commercials with things like "Rainy-day fun: Hey, kids, try drinking all the water out of the kitchen tap!"

33. Does Dave, or anyone else for that matter,
actually read our E-mail and other correspondence?

Surprisingly, the answer is yes. While Dave may not see every single letter sent to him, all letters addressed to him through the Feedback form are sent to his office for review. Each and every letter received via E-mail is read and passed along to the appropriate person(s) at the show. While some letter writers may get a personal response from a staffer, please know that due to the very large number of correspondence we receive, we cannot guarantee a response in every case.

58. LOL!
Here's one;

Watching the clip of David Letterman and Bill O'Reilly was wonderful and disturbing. Wonderful to see a person like O'Reilly called out for all his 'crap' (I daresay it's more than 60%) by such a true giant as Mr. Letterman, and disturbing to watch an Icon like David Letterman resort to a flat putdown out of sheer disgust. David Letterman has always been a symbol of composure in dealing with guests in interviews. It would be my opinion that Mr. Letterman's rebuke is more a commentary on the vilianous and self-righteous O'Reilly than on Mr. Letterman.
I am only mildly disappointed that Mr. Letterman did not astutely 'hand O'Reilly his ass' as he very much deserved and as Mr. Letterman is more than capable.
I would love to see an apology written by Mr. Letterman, for I know that such an apology, written by a master such as David Letterman, would contain just what O'Reilly richly deserves and in such a way that it would pass between Mr. O'Reilly's ears, through his head untouched and out of his mouth as he, in his gloating and bombastic fashion, read it out loud and live on the air, not realizing the depth of the message contained therein.

Something like say, "I feel awful for {blank}, I feel awful for 'this', I feel awful for 'that'."

Now surely my suggestion is childish, but I'm sure that a pro like David Letterman could find it in his heart to give Mr. O'Reilly what he deserves.

77. Here's mine:
According to my calculations, you have made an error in regard to the amount of time "crap" spews forth from the lips of Bill O'Reilley. That is, if you count "total crap", "completely fabricated, unadulterated bull crap", "fallacious frog poopie", "unmitigated maggot pies", and "periciously phragrant parrot pooh", Mr. O'Reilley's "crap factor" is more along the lines of 67%, using the weighted falafel discount measure.

Please try to be more accurate in your "crap factor" assesments.

Otherwise, Dave, you're doin' great!

i don't watch letterman (or anyone but stewart) very often but i loved it! i have never seen dave do anything but puff pieces. apparently dave is now p*ssed enough to take on the o'really's in the media.

I've been a Dave fan since I was a teenager in high-school. Now I'm in my 40's and he's still the King of Late Night if you ask me!

144. Doing....
done!

Thank you Dave and to all on the staff who supported Dave's actions of exposing one of the most vitriolic windbags on television. There is no fair and balanced reporting with Bill O'Reilly. Thank you again for exposing him as a fraud.
