My Thoughts about Hillary
I decided to post something un-Cheney.

First, I think she deserves credit for being the first First Lady to really establish a political career independent of her husband. Yes, Mrs. Roosevelt was a powerful First Lady and after her husband died she went on to do continued good work at the UN, but Mrs. Clinton is the first one to run for and win elective office in her own right.

Second, I don't support her for the 2008 nomination--as yet I haven't made any official choice, but I do know that Hillary wouldn't be my first or second or even third choice. I find her very calculating. Her husband was/is calculating too, but he had a charm which seemed to make it much more palatable. Mrs. C, unfortunately, lacks Bill's charm and charisma, imo.

Third, I feel that while most polls give her a strong edge for the 2008 nomination--most Democrats are not focused on that as yet. Much of it is name recognition. I feel her support is wide but not very deep and once the democrats begin focusing on the election that she may very well collapse as a candidate.

Finally, I think the old Clintoesque/Dick Morris strategy of co-oping GOP ideas and finding "common ground" has run its coarse. I think Democrats want a true blue fighting Democrat leading the ticket in '08 and one who is not afraid to take on the GOP.

Just my two-cents.

1. I Think She'd Do Well As President, If She Won.
But I'm not thinking that far ahead either. It is way too soon and irrelevant to be putting that much weight into the 08 candidate right now.

Right now I only care about 06.

3. She will never get my vote.
I'm done voting for spineless Dems. Even if I don't totally agree with somebody, like Dean for example, he would get my vote because I know where he stands and he is not afraid to stand up against the neo-cons.

4. I refuse to vote for a repug, and I think it's un-American not to vote.
I also think a third party would be damaging unless a savior is found, and soon. So, anyone who wins the Dem. primaries gets my vote.
I'm not a big Hillary fan and think she's being touted by repugs because they don't think she can win either.

6. I'm not sure Hillary is even running in '08
but I have no doubt she would not be afraid to take on the GOP. She's tough as nails. I'm open about 2008 myself.

7. I'd prefer at least a half a dozen other Democratic candidates over her
But if she wins the primary I will run all the way to the polls to vote for her. I don't agree with her on some stuff but I sure do admire and respect her. I like strong willed women so she has that going for her.

8. "I find her very calculating".Pilots, plumbers and fry cooks"calculate".
Politicians have been known to calculate.

BTW, "finding common ground" is nothing new to politics. A big tent strategy will be the course taken by the Dem nominee in 2008, no matter who he or she is.

9. She's tough, tough enough
Edited on Wed Feb-15-06 08:36 PM by raysr
to take on any repuke, and kick their ass. They are terrified of her, it comes out as hate, but in reality she's done nothing to anybody to make them hate her. I stood down a repuke hammering Hill once with "what has she ever done to you?" The reply was "she was married to Clinton". Well, that's really all they've got. However, I don't think '08 is her time. Things are way too divided in the country. Hill is polarizing, it's not her fault but she is. We need someone who can bring the country back together, if it's possible at all now.

10. She'll win re-election to her senate seat hands down. It will be the
launchpad for her 2008 campaign. Hill has the right people in place to get the job done.

11. I hope you're right. I think she'd
make a A+ prez, with Bill in the wings as Sec of State! Man, imagine how the world could get calmed down. I don't like the "Bush,Clinton,Bush,Clinton" thing though. Too much like a dynasty.

12. She's just another pandering DLC political hack. Won't get my vote.
Her support of the war and the occupation is enough for me to look elsewhere if the Dems are dumb enough to, again, nominate a pro-war "not as bad" candidate.

13. My take on Senator Clinton is that she does not deserve the taunting
she gets from Limbaugh and the other far-right radio fascists. They pick on her the way school boys pick on "the smart girl" in their class. Impossible to make them stop, and Senator Clinton bears unfair burden of that kind of sexist bullshit, mostly because she's intelligent and successful.

On the other hand, I am very anxious about her shimmying over to the middle and then over to the right in order to secure support for the nomination. If I were in charge of the universe, I'd prefer a candidate who moves left, then way left. But so far I'm not in charge of the universe, so I'm stuck as a bystander except as a volunteer and finally a voter in the process.

In the primaries, I'll support a more progressive Democrat and I hope several are placed before me on the ballot.

14. She's Got Too Much Baggage
The Repugs are falling all over themselves hoping that Hillary will run. That way, they can bring up all of the Clenis/Whitewater/Travelgate nonsense and obscure how much they've screwed up the country after 8 years. I respect her a lot, and she's become a great Senator. However, I'm going to vote for someone else in the primary and support Hillary 100% if she wins the nomination.

You are right. Some people are good at that. I need to get better at it myself. I also need to reread the original post again and let it sink in some more. And then I am going to recommend it.
