After difficulty getting information from Cheney's staff, ABC News learned from sources mostly outside the White House that the vice president's Secret Service contingent had notified the local sheriff an hour after the vice president accidentally shot prominent Texas lawyer Harry Whittington with a pellet gun while hunting for quail.

It was NOT a "pellet gun". It was a shotgun. Bird shot are little pellets. This is a way of spinning the story to make it SOUND less heinous than it was.

By the way - at 15 feet (it was not 90 feet because the spray pattern is well described and fits 15 feet), those pellets would have blasted some of his face away and possibly lodged under bone and in the brain.
