Sanders Finalizes Deal to Bring Over 2.5 Million Gallons of Discounted Home Heating Oil to Vermont

Washington, DC Rep. Bernie Sanders today announced an agreement with the Venezuelan government, CITGO Petroleum Corporation, the State of Vermont, Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity (CVOEO) and Citizens Energy to bring over 2.5 million gallons of discounted home heating oil into Vermont. 2.4 million gallons of the oil will be sold at a 40% discount to participants of Vermonts Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Crisis Fuel Assistance Program, and the WARMTH Program. The remaining 108,000 gallons of fuel will be distributed free of charge to homeless shelters throughout Vermont. Officials from the Venezuelan government, CITGO, Citizens Energy, CVOEO and the Vermont Fuel Dealers will join Sanders at an event on Tuesday, February 7 that will mark the start of the program.

Sanders said, At a time when home heating oil costs are soaring, this agreement will bring much-needed relief to thousands of senior citizens and low-income families. This program will help ensure that no one in Vermont goes cold this winter. I want to thank the Venezuelan government, CITGO, Citizens Energy, CVOEO, and the State of Vermont for their hard work in making this happen.

Under the deal brokered by Sanders, CITGO will work with the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity (CVOEO) and Citizens Energy, both non-profit organizations, to implement the program. Citizens Energy will purchase over 2.5 million gallons of heating oil at a 40 percent discount from CITGO. CVOEO working with the State of Vermont will be responsible for identifying low-income families and individuals using the same criteria used for the distribution of federal heating assistance benefits under LIHEAP, the Crisis Fuel Program and WARMTH.

Thousands of low-income individuals will receive a letter from the State of Vermont instructing them to contact participating fuel dealers or their CAP Agency to purchase the discounted oil. Customers may purchase up to 200 gallons of fuel at the discounted price.

Sanders said, No one in this country should ever have to make the choice between putting food on the table and paying their home heating bills. I am very pleased that we were able to reach this agreement and help ease the burden of skyrocketing fuel costs for Vermonters.

Officials from Venezuela, CITGO, Citizens Energy, and the Vermont Fuel Dealers will join Sanders at an event on February 7 to kick off the program by delivering discounted fuel to a LIHEAP participant and answering questions about the program. The event will be held on February 7 at 11:30 a.m. at a location in Burlington. Additional details will be released prior to the event.
