The BIG story out of these hearings ought to be that Bush and "Squeaky" Gonzales are asserting the president's power to do almost anything. Period. So, gun owners beware!
Now we have the words, or lack of words.
Gonzales refused to answer if the Bushites are or can open First Class Mail without warrants. (Leahy question)
Gonzales did not answer if the president could suspend all or part of the Posse Comitatus Act. (Feinstein question)
Democrats should be screaming about this --- and this is the point they should make for maximum political effect.
If Bush can claim that being 'commander-in-chief' permits him to secretly spy on Americans without warrants, why can he not then keep all the records on gun sales? Why can he not keep a secret list of all gun owners in the country -- after all if there are al Qaida here, they almost certainly own firearms. Can't you hear this statement from Bush: "If al Qaida is buying guns in this country, we want to know about it." Sounds pretty reasonable, doesn't it? How much do you want to bet that this collection of personal information isn't already going on?
This means that every Republican, NRA, gun owner in this country is now or can be under survellience!
If the Bushites are going to be stopped, we've got to undercut their base -- and scaring gun owners about their rights is a great place to start!
