Taking time out to sympathize with the wet west coasters.
What a hell of a way to begin the New Year. I fear that Mother Nature is having the west coast feel some of the same heart-wrenching experiences as Katrina victims.

My heart goes out to all of them.

1. Let's not forget the scorched Oklahoma folks, either.
Those fires are getting BAD. I hope in 2006 we have far fewer weather disasters.

12. Eastern NM started getting hit today, too
and one town has been partially evacuated.

Shoot, if California would just quit hogging all that rain, we'd all be better off

2. Weat coast is in another league
Mother nature doesn't need to have us reflect on Katrina to humble us. If it ain't rain, floods, mud slide, levee breakes, and wind, it's wildfires and earthquakes. Like I said, we're in a different league, but it's still a fascinating game to play.

4. Thanks. Everytime it rains I feel this will be the time my
trailer goes scooting down the slope. But it hasn't happened since the last El Nino and it didn't happen during it, so I keep my fingers crossed. Lately, I was worried about brush fires because we had gone through a drought the last couple of years, but this rain will postpone that. Of course now there are those little tremors I am feeling under my floor. Oh earthquake don't come now!

"I wanted to revel but Storms put us in the dark for hours.
Went out and bought a camp stove and other items to keep us warm and fed in SOGGY CALIF.
Woke up with a Flu...NYE indeed, came in with a Bang for us!
NYs resolution? No More REPUBLICANS"

21. Santa Cruz Mountains
It was pretty wild up here. A tree branch did some minor damage to the Prius and just missed the other car.
There is now a tree leaning in the direction of our power/phone lines with another tree holding it up for now.

24. I envy your location the rest of the time
hope things turn out well for you. Do you have a chainsaw? I'm in tornado country, so it's an essential.

25. No, But Some Neighbors Do
Do you have a chainsaw?

I could have cut up the branch that fell with a handsaw if I had to,
but it was nice of the neighbor to come along with the chainsaw.

The tree will need a professional to take it down safely.

It's been rainy and windy here in SF tsunami zone, but not dangerous in any way. (Knock on desk)

13. Oh man.
Well, we know she and her family got an early heads up.

If something bad had happened, we would have heard somehow.

It's probable that the family is either sheltering close to home or safely somewhere with friends. The holiday makes everything a little more chaotic.

This year had to be a sunuvabitch to the bitter end, didn't it?

17. We're being hit so hard here in Oregon. As I once again shoveled
water out of my garage and office, I couldn't help but think about those people in Louisiana and Mississippi. Just a few inches is so awful. Such a mess and so much to clean up. Can't imagine what you went through and are going through. Oh how I feel for all of you.

18. I Spoke To A Friend of Mine
tonight who is visiting family in Posey California. Family and friends are now stuck in the mountains due to mud and rain. The rain was coming down so hard that I could hear it over his cell phone. Prayers and good thoughts for everyone who is dealing with this.

26. Things here in the Redding floodplain seem to be okay
but there have been a few people who've been wiped out by this in the southern part of town. :(

It's supposed to stop raining on tuesday, which is good. We've had probably 10 inches here since friday, and the yard is inundated, but it's running off into the storm drains in our 'hood. Some parts of town they're backing up a bit, but not too bad in most areas.

I went to the Sacramento River (which is 2 blocks away) today to look at birds, and it's a turgid, turbid, raging behemoth, but still many feet below flood stage here.

My friend over on the coast near Eureka said things are a giant mess there. No power, creeks swollen, mudslides blocking the roads. :(

Good luck to all the people in the north bay and the Sacramento Valley!
