Libby seeks jurors who trust Cheney (BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!)
Edited on Wed Jan-17-07 11:07 AM by Beetwasher
WASHINGTON - A potential juror in the perjury trial of former White House aide "Scooter" Libby was allowed to remain in the jury pool Wednesday after saying she would be impartial and put aside her tepid impression of Vice President Dick Cheney, an expected defense witness.

"I'm not particularly impressed with a lot of his manners of being, but I can't speak to his credibility," said the woman, who works for the Department of Health and Human Services, as jury selection continued for a second day.

Cheney's credibility has emerged as a key issue, with defense lawyers looking for a panel that can trust the vice president, expected to testify on behalf of Libby, his former chief of staff. Libby is accused of lying to investigators about his conversations with journalists about an outed CIA officer.

Libby's attorneys say it's critical they know whether potential jurors view the vice president as credible. Two people who expressed doubts about that were dismissed from the jury pool Tuesday.

Rumor has it they are going to dig up his mother and put her on the jury, as she may be the only one. But even w/ her they're not sure.

2. What portion of the US population trusts Cheney?
This is a great way to cull the jury pool for people sympathetic to Libby.

But last time I saw his approval ratings was many, many months ago and it was 19% and there's no way it's improved.

12. Exactly!
If the judge agrees that the jury has to be picked from that 19%, who do you think wins the case? I believe that only one juror has to oppose conviction to get a hung jury.

14. It Doesn't Work Like That
Edited on Wed Jan-17-07 11:37 AM by Beetwasher
The defense is TRYING to get the 19% on the jury, but the prosecution has their say too about who gets on. The judge can't rule that they can only pick from 19%. I'm not too worried about this, this is only the defense STRATEGY in picking the jury and they are going to have a very, very difficult time at it.

4. Are there even 12 people in the DC area who trust Unka Dick?
I also question the validity of allowing employees of the Fed. Gov't to sit on the jury! Isn't that kinda like you sitting on a jury when your boss is accused of a crime? When you go back to work, the retaliation could be devastating.

10. I was thinking the same thing. And, another
problem for me is the way the juror questions have been presented. From what I can tell they are trying to weed out anyone who doesn't like Cheney. But doesn't the alternative seem biased? Who makes up the questionnaire? Is it the judge or the prosecution or the defense team. Are we going to end up with a white-washing jury?

13. Well then, this jury selection could take YEARS.
Edited on Wed Jan-17-07 11:28 AM by in_cog_ni_to
I hope people who hate Cheney are smart enough to schmooze, fib, lie, tell half-truths to get on the jury. :)

on edit...I'm sure EVERYONE on the jury will have to have a background check if they're allowed anywhere near the face shooter though.

16. Maybe Fitz is laughing on the inside...
but he's not laughing on the outside

Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald objected repeatedly, but to no avail, that Libby's lawyers were going beyond the more general opinion questions that U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton asked the entire jury pool when the proceedings began Tuesday morning.

Fitzgerald complained that defense attorneys Theodore Wells and William Jeffress were turning jury selection into "an open-ended Rorschach test into how you feel about the Bush administration, Vice President Cheney" the Iraq war and various reporters. "They're trying the case" in jury selection, he argued.

But Walton ruled the defense lawyers have a right to know if "somebody has a very negative attitude to the Bush administration."

17. He's Just Doing His Job
There's only so many jurors that the defense can object to. They can't do it indefinitely and there aren't very many people who DON'T have a negative attitude to Bushco., especially in DC. They can't object forever, to everyone and Fitz ALSO has HIS say in who gets on the jury.

18. Things are good.
Mr. Fitzgerald's case is so strong that unless Team Libby gets the WHIG/OSP/OVP as a jury, he will convict Scooter on every count. I am not discounting Mr. Wells talents as an attorney. He and others on the team are very capable attorneys. But Mr. Fitzgerald has enough to convict Libby.
