Have the mainstream media finally lost it? Has Bush's much-anticipated "Way Forward" speech tonight finally pushed them around the bend, or are they just this desperate for ratings?

MSNBC has a countdown clock, CNN is ticking off the times the speech will air in different time zones around the globe. I don't know what Fox is doing, frankly, but its the headline story on most US Newspapers today.

You'd think Bush was going to, you know, say something meaningful tonight. Or coherent. My guess is the speech will contain these elements - First the old stuff gleaned from recycled speeches over the pervious 4 years:

1. Success in Iraq is important because Iraq is the central front on the war of terror (thanks to Bush) with much oil wealth that could be used to threaten "its neighbors" (aka Israel) if Syria and/or Iran took control of Iraq's government (the "we gotta save the oil" part of the speech).

2. The Iraqi people want freedom and liberty and democracy and it is the Noble Calling of our time to bring this to them (same old tired rhetoric - code for we gotta keep Iraq out of the hands of Iran and Syria and establish a Democracy to protect Israel)

3. The American People would be less safe if we don't "succeed" in establishing a Democracy in Iraq because . . . well, see #1 about the "oil blackmail" he's always rattling on about. Oh, and al Qaeda now in Iraq (thanks to him) would use it as a base to launch further attacks against America and her allies. Unclear whether or not the fear mongering portion of the speech will actually use mushroom cloud imagery as before. I would not be surprised, however, to hear the word "nuclear" butchered again.

4. When "they" Stand Up we'll Stand Down. Once again, there will be benchmarks the Iraq government must meet in order to receive additional American troops and American money. Most likely, the details of these benchmarks will again be deliberately vague. Some of this stuff might sound new, but we've all heard the podium-pounding about Iraqi troop training before. There may - possibly - be a some kind of benchmark timeline mentioned.

Now a prediction on the brand new stuff we'll be treated to this evening:

1. Some vigorous chest pounding about Saddam's execution and justice for the Iraqis who suffered under his reign. Doubtful he'll mention that the U/S. government was instrumental in putting him in power in the first place. This is supposed to give us the idea that som kind of actual progress has taken place.

2. A weak admission that earlier U.S. military plans failed and that not enough troops were sent into Iraq in the beginning, and that the sectarian violence wasn't anticipated (despite repeated warnings from countless experts and al Qaeda leaders - that this is exactly what would occur). So to remedy this mistake . . . .

3. Troop levels will be increased by at least 20,000 over the next few months. This will be a two-part deployment, with 11,000 troops being immediately sent to Baghdad and other violent regions, and another 11,000 sent in stages over the next few months once the Iraqi government meets certain benchmarks, which leads us to . . . .

4. The American taxpayer is to pony up an additional one billion dollars to go to jobs programs (!) and other social funding to help the economy and Iraqis directly (bet the Katrina victims are jealous) if the Iraqi government agrees to meet benchmarks with regards to political achievements and training of Iraqi troops and police.

So let's sum up: Most of this 20-minute speech will be old recycled stuff from previous "victory" rallies and fear-mongering screeds and tired "stand up stand down" rhetoric about Iraqi troops. The new stuff will include a couple of items that will be wildly unpopular with the American people: escalating the war by sending more troops and more money.

And what's the supposed payoff for the lives of our troops and the financial debt of the nation (and hit to our global reputation)? A "successful" Democracy in Iraq as defined by the Bush Crime Family? How long might that last once American troops left? A few years? What's the point?

Oh, the other alleged payoff is this ridiculous notion that a democratic Iraq will magically make Americans safe. Does anyone in their right mind still believe that Bush is interested in protecting Americans when all he's done is succeed in killing them? Why not increase port security or spend money to educate vulnerable populations about the good America has done instead of creating blinding hatred in Muslim (and other) communities that can ONLY result in increased terrorist recruitment and attacks on America and her allies? But gee, where's the fun in that? And where's the Halliburton contracts and oil revenue?

Fact is, we couldn't be less safe if individuals from the (massive and expensive and useless) Department of Homeland Security lined us all up in school cafeterias and painted cherry-red bulls-eyes on our foreheads.

So neocons, does this illegal war still seem "worth it" to you? Call the program tonight and tell us how wonderful the Way Forward is going to be. Tell us what fresh new ideas you heard and liked in his speech.
