Judge restricts media at media baron's trial - "designated media area"

The chief judge of the federal court in Chicago issued a warning to journalists who want to cover the Conrad Black case: Play nice.

On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge James Holderman ordered court security officers to supervise a "designated media area" in the courthouse lobby. The order said media may not solicit or conduct interviews in the lobby outside that area.

Starts March 5

The order, which applies to all court proceedings, forbids journalists from leaving the designated area to film, photograph or interview people passing through the lobby. Anyone violating the order may be in contempt of court and expelled from the courthouse.

Black's criminal trial, beginning March 5, is expected to draw international attention. The former CEO of the company that owns the Chicago Sun-Times is a resident of Canada and a British lord.
