Anyone watch Lou Dobbs tonight
When the report about Chavez was on I got the distinct feeling that the blame for oil prices was going to Chavez. The reporter said the price had risen from $15 to $60 since Chavez had taken office. Also said it was hurting many American interests such as Exxon and other oil companies. I figured Bush would find a way to blame the prices on someone other than the real culprits, the oil companies.Did I hear the report wrong?

3. Oil companies can't control prices.
Edited on Tue Jan-09-07 07:44 PM by Heewack
It's the big national operations, if anything it is nations such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Russia, etc., that have the largest possible control over pricing. The big oil companies simply do not control enough of the commodity to have a manipulating power on price.

4. I wish you could put that in all caps, Heewack!
The American public does not understand how it works and rushes to blame the oil companies. They may well influence government with lobbyists, but they do NOT control the price of oil.

6. They may not control the PRICE of crude,
but they sure as hell do with the refineries and play an excellant middleman who rapes us at will. In our town alone, there are gas stations charging $2.30 and others who are charging $2.09. The small guys are the cheapest while the big names are the most. I asked at one of them and was told that reflected what he had to pay to his supplier and he didn't think it was fair either as he was losing customers.

So say what you want about the public being uneducated.....Russia and Saudi and the others you mentioned may well control the crude, but they don't control refineries....and that is where the $$ are being made.

Case in point, look up what we were paying the last time crude was at it's current price. Can you say GOUGE? Who's doing it...the supplier or the middleman? Please enlighten this undeducated american.
