Samsung’s $200,000 Machine Gun Sentry Robot
Samsung has partnered with Korea University to develop a machine-gun equipped sentry robot, which consists of “two cameras: one for day-time and one for infrared night vision, zooming capabilities, a speaker for notifying the intruder, sophisticated pattern recognition to detect the difference between humans/trees, and a 5.5mm machine-gun.”

…are expected to sell for $200,00 USD and will be available late in 2007. The South Korean government plans to deploy these friendly reminders on the border between South and North Korea, to further ease relations between the countries

Video of it in action at link

(Just you wait - the neocons will be putting these on the border soon.....)

This could be a step to having robot armies in the future. This thing would be the ultimate guard dog of some rich tycoons estate.

4. I saw some links to homemade versions (using a computer, java, etc)
at that link below the video.

Might have to whip up some plans for one myself :)

3. Yup, I can't think of a better way to ease relations in a friendly way than to
point guns aimed to shoot first, ask 'why' later at your doorstep.

Still, it allows soldiers to be used elsewhere...

5. Jesus Christ, doesn't anybody else watch the Sci Fi Channel?
armed robots = bad idea

The last thing the world needs is a screwed up computer with a gun. And if the system is remote, somebody will find a way to hack it.

Bad. Idea.

I find this new killing toy very unsettling.

11. It's probably easy to trick these things.
Just like the enemy AI in a computer game. If the designers had to work hard to make the robots distinguish between humans and trees, any vaguely human-shaped decoy should distract them.

23. I see nothing wrong with it...
Provided there is a man in loop.

Its just another tool for the ROK military.

I can definitely see the uses in selected areas of the Korean DMZ.

25. Wow, so sneaking around in bush costumes really will come back in style!
I wonder if it knows the difference between between moving trees and still trees, since it knows the difference between trees and people. That would be a total cock-up on their part if simply donning a fake bush a-la cartoon style totally defeats this thing.

I mean, I'd hate for it to make a mistake -- but the technology shows definite promise.

27. Looks like there are ways to thwart it.
In the video, the machine's GUI interface shows a field-of-view with about 290 degrees of range of view/motion. On either side of the view range are two red regions, that I suspect means reduced capacity for the machine when turned to extremes in its arc of horizontal view. Essentially...you might be able to sneak up behind it.
