Cafferty: Surge = Escalation = Vietnam
Video up at Crooks and Liars: http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/01/04/cafferty-blasts-the-mccain-doctrine/

President Bush is expected to call for sending as many as 40,000 additional troops to Vietnam — I mean Iraq — next week. Escalating the war is now being called a surge. Stay the course has been relabeled. It's the new way forward. We did this in Vietnam, remember? The U.S. kept sending troops over there which only led to more people dying.

<snip>

Is 3,006 deaths not enough? How many do you suppose it will take before President Bush's conscience begins to bother him — 5,000, 10,000, more? How many? Meanwhile, the White House continues to try to get you to think that this is something it's not. The word surge is being used to camouflage the administration plans to escalate the war in Iraq.

And it's not just about the troops. The White House says they're looking at a whole range of options including on the economic front. This little misadventure is already cost us half a trillion dollars, and we're losing. But there's never been much of a market for reality in the Bush White House. It's all about the spin you know.

So next week when the president talks about sending more of your sons and daughters to die in Iraq, don't think surge. Recognize it for what it is.

6. I've been saying it for months, even years
Overheard in our favorite Mexican restaurant tonight:

"That pork barrell shit has to stop. They're all crooks, beholden to someone. They don't consider our interests in their decisions. It's the people with money."

"No Child Left Behind is utter bullshit."

"Saddam's hanging was a show."

"If Nancy Pelosi doesn't stop the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, I'm going to her office and sit in front of the door until she does, or I get arrested. Got bail?"

We've been going to this particular restaurant for over 20 years. It was one place to go to get away from real life in America today. People are talking. People who don't spend time on DU or watch the cable pundits. Nancy has got her hands full.

8. Cynical Bush plan for Iraq and Middle East Free Trade
Article by Antonia Juhasz in Jan issue of In These Times,
"Spoils of War," shows the Bush Admin economic plan
for Iraq, and why they want to keep our troops there --
article available soon at
http://www.inthesetimes.com/site/archives/covers_ind/31/01/

Put simply, U.S. oil companies want access to as much of
Iraq's oil as they can get and on the best possible terms.
The fact that Iraq is a war-ravaged and occupied nation works
to the companies' benefits. As a result, the companies and
the Bush Administration are holding U.S. troops hostage in
Iraq until they get what they want. Once the companies get
their lucrative contracts, they will still need protection to
get to work. What better security force is there than 144,000
American troops?

<snip>

..the Bush administration has used the "stick" of
the Iraq war to convince nations across the Middle East to
adopt its free trade agenda.

<snip>

If successful, the MEFTA (Middle East Free Trade Area) would
be concluded by 2013, and include 20 countries: Algeria,
Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Palestine, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan,
Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia,
Syria, the United Arab Emirates, Tunisia and Yemen.
