Boy, 10, Dies After Mimicking Hussein's Execution

POSTED: 9:29 am CST January 4, 2007
UPDATED: 10:30 am CST January 4, 2007

WEBSTER, Texas -- Police and family members said a 10-year-old boy who died by hanging himself from a bunk bed was apparently mimicking the execution of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

Sergio Pelico was found dead Sunday in his apartment bedroom, said Webster police Lt. Tom Claunch. Pelico's mother told police he had previously watched a news report on Saddam's death. "It appears to be accidental," Claunch said. "Our gut reaction is that he was experimenting." An autopsy of the fifth-grader's body was pending.

Julio Gustavo, Sergio's uncle, said the boy was a happy and curious child. He said Sergio had watched TV news with another uncle on Saturday and asked the uncle about Saddam's death. "His uncle told him it was because Saddam was real bad," Gustavo said. "He (Sergio) said, 'OK.' And that was it." Sergio's mother, Sara Pelico DeLeon, was at work Sunday while Sergio and other children were under the care of an uncle, Gustavo said. One of the children found Sergio's body in his bedroom.

Police said the boy had tied a slipknot around his neck while on a bunk bed. Police investigators learned that Sergio had been upset about not getting a Christmas gift from his father, but they don't believe the boy intentionally killed himself.

2. Hey now...
are the sort of people who complain about violent video games the same ones who are happy watching Saddam's execution over and over? My guess is yes.

4. Erm, I'm not a fan of violence of any kind.
What's so great about hurting people -- or even pretending to?

10. It's all right for adults, I guess.
Still, it makes me queasy to hear kids getting into the violence.

I know, I know -- I played cops and robbers when I was a kid. I remember lying there on the ground, pretending to be dead, really getting a feel for it. It was kind of spooky -- and basically a good imaginative experience.

And ultimately, I think the sitting on the ass all day, staring at a screen is actually more damaging than the content. Maybe??

I guess as a mother I just feel better putting my foot down about violent movies and video games -- and if my kids want to sneak a few games at a friend's house, well, that's what kids do.

:hi:

But a lot of us liberal mamas cry about video game violence AND real life violence (the latter much more , though).

It's appalling, what our culture is like these days.
