"US joins Iran in hailing Saddam’s execution, Britian, Australia object."

It's a shame, Britain, Australia, Germany, other countries opposed to the death penalty will so disappoint some folks here.

===

PARIS - The United States joined its arch-foe Iran on Saturday in hailing the justice of Saddam Hussein's execution, but European powers opposed the use of capital punishment.

Bush was asleep at his Texas ranch when the hanging of Saddam was carried out in Baghdad, the White House said. ...

Britain, the main US ally in Iraq, said Saddam Hussein had been "held to account" but reiterated its opposition to the use of the death penalty, as did Australia, another key supporter of the US invasion.

"He has now been held to account. The British government does not support the use of the death penalty, in Iraq or anywhere else. We advocate an end to the death penalty worldwide, regardless of the individual or the crime."

2. That's ironic, isn't Iran part of the "Axis of Evil"?

9. Yes, I know but it still seem ironic
The people most in agreement with us are a member of Bush's axis of evil, meanwhile our allies disagree with us on his execution.

3. Hypocrites
If Britain and Australia has opposed execution, they could have made not handing Saddam over a condition of their support for the war. They didn't. They're responsible for this as is the US.

Blair's government welcomed the death sentence when it was passed, but even that's beside the point. It's what they do that counts, not what they say.

5. Should Britain and Australia ...
have required imposition on Iraqis of a constitution forbidding executions from taking place under the Iraqi judicial system as a condition for Britain and Australia to support the war?

4. I hope Iran looks out its "front window" (Persian Gulf)
While they and the U.S. are cheering and dancing about the execution of Saddam, there's an armada of U.S. warships sitting off the coast of Iran.

8. I hope you're not ...
... suggesting that we actually USE that armada. Shock and Awe, the sequel.

10. No, I'm not suggesting such a thing.
We're getting our butts handed to us in a two front war. A three front war would be suicidal.

11. The US and Iran? Cool, maybe we won't be attacking them then...

Didn't the Australians pull out of Iraq; and the last I've heard Britain's been pulling out as well? (so for that, if nothing else, Bush won't be giving them any consideration. )
