School officials in Will County say they feel like they've been harmed twice, first by a radioactive tritium leak and then by what they view as a tax break for the offender--in part because of the contamination.

Exelon's Braidwood nuclear power plant, where tritium leaks have been found since 1996, was recently valued at $350 million, far less than the $585 million that school officials and their advisers argue it's worth.

The tax implications are serious for Reed Custer Community School District 255U, which said it would lose about $7 million in a year if the new, lower number survives an appeal by the district. The county assessment could mean layoffs and program cuts for the growing Braidwood-based district, which has a $21 million budget, officials said.

"This is a bad deal all around," Supt. John Asplund said. "If you want to be a good neighbor, don't pollute the groundwater and don't profit from it."

"We also had to deal with a lot of scared and upset parents and community members wondering what 'tritium' does," Asplund said.

NEW YORK, Dec 21 (Reuters) - U.S. power company Exelon Corp. (EXC.N: Quote, Profile , Research) received an additional $74.3 million distribution rate increase in the rehearing of a case in which the company had originally been awarded a fraction of its request.

The Illinois Commerce Commission agreed to rehear the case, after granting an $8.3 million distribution rate increase earlier this year. The company had originally requested an increase of $317 million.

At the rehearing, the company asked for an increase of $110 to $119 million. Late on Wednesday, regulators granted an additional increase of $74.3 million, for a total increase of $82.6 million.

They can afford to stop ripping off the school district!
