NYC Disc Jockey Shot 13 Times Dies

NEW YORK (AP) -- A popular hip-hop disc jockey died Saturday after being shot at least 13 times earlier this month, police said.

Carl Blaze, born Carlos Rivera, was shot outside an apartment building near Manhattan's Inwood section on Dec. 7, and his $20,000 diamond chain was stolen, police said. He was taken to Harlem Hospital Center, where he died Saturday.

Blaze, 30, was a DJ for hip-hop and R&B radio station Power 105.1 FM for about three years. He had gained a large fan base by spinning records at clubs and on the air on Friday and Saturday nights.

Power 105.1 FM was holding a tribute for Blaze on Saturday night. The station is owned by Clear Channel Communications.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time," said Josefa Paganuzzi, a Clear Channel spokeswoman.

1. Wonder if Clear Channel had insurance on him. No doubt they did.

Power 105's DJ Carl Blaze Still Clinging To Life Following Robbery Shooting

DJ Carl Blaze, a prominent figure in New York/New Jersey's radio and club scene, was shot multiple times yesterday morning outside an Inwood, Manhattan apartment building. Reports have surfaced that suggest Blaze had finished up a gig at the X-Bar nightclub and had dropped off friends at an apartment. While leaving, an unidentified group of men robbed and shot the DJ as many as 16 times.

Blaze, born name Carlos Rivera, 30, appears to have been robbed of his diamond chain and initialed "CB" emblem. One resident at the apartment building, Elizabeth Figueroa, told Rueters news that she heard gunfire and used the intercom button to identify what was occurring. She said Carl Blaze responded, "I've been shot! I've been shot! Help me, please help me!"" Another resident, Vincent Espinosa, ran down to assess the situation and help the DJ, who according to him, "had like 15,16 shots."

Even more, DJ Carl Blaze was expected to attend and deliver an award at the Justo Mixtape Awards on Thursday evening. In the meantime, he is being cared for at a nearby hospital. He is married and has two sons, ages 8 and 1.

3. Very very sad
All people thinking of being DJ's need to watch the movies "Play Misty for me" and "Talk Radio" before taking that plunge.
