BBC: NY store drops 'faux fur' jackets

NY store drops 'faux fur' jackets

A New York department store has said it is pulling two models of hooded jackets
from its shelves after claims the "faux fur" linings were made from dog fur.

A US animal protection organisation said the hooded jackets at Macy's were lined
with raccoon dog.

Raccoon dogs, which are not kept as pets, are bred in large numbers as their fur
is like that of the raccoon.

Macy's said it was removing the items to comply with its policy against selling
any dog or cat fur.

1. YECH
I don't care to wear fur whether it is real or fake, it's not a good look for people anyway. I just don't see the attraction. x(

2. I made myself a fake fur coat in the 90s
when all the newspapers were pushing yuppie "fur lust" and I was tired of looking like the Michelin Man in my down coats, anyway.

That thing is WARM. It's so warm that I can only justify wearing it here when the high temperature is below 40, which means maybe six days a year.

It looks just realistic enough that I get the hairy eyeball if I wear it to the health food store.

It's the warmest thing I've ever owned.

5. I have several and they are indeed warm! One is lavender blue, but people still ask
what kind of fur it is! My daughter asked me how many Muppets I had to kill to make it!

7. I bought a really nice faux fur several years ago ...
It is the warmest coat I have ever owned. The downside is that it is so well made that it looks so real that I expect to be splashed in red paint whenever I wear it.

I was sitting in an auditorium once ... a woman mad a big show of moving because of the fur ... it took me a while to figure out it was my fake that caused all the uproar.

8. Mine looks real, too
although one would be hard pressed to determine the animal it was modeled upon. Mink? Raccoon?

Like I said, I get people looking daggers at me at the co-op.

9. I assumed yours did ...
It just kinda ticks me off that we chose to go faux (I wouldn't consider a real fur) and end up derided for it:(

3. Good.
I'm glad to hear that Macy's is doing their best to comply with their policies.

(And here is how real fur can legally be sold as faux fur.)

:hi:

4. bwaaaa! yuck!
The sad thing--apart of course from the essential fact that animals died to provide that fur--is that people trying to do the right thing may have bought those jackets.

I have a couple of fake fur coats and they are super warm. So I can see how other anti-fur folks might have been led to buy these.

Good for Macy's for pulling those coats.

6. Even though I'm not an animal rights activist
the idea of wearing fur icks me out. So I guess the folks at PETA have had some success if they've gotten to someone like me.
