Talk Radio HELL
x(

well 'Boston's Progressive Talk' switched to a Rumba station yesterday :eyes:

I'm a talk radio JUNKIE and was forced to listen to RW screed this morning on my way to work. The host was talking about the story of the marines who admitted to gunning down civilians and HE was actually quite reasonable about the situation (a LOT of RW talk show hosts NOW think this war is bullshit) but the callers. The fucking Bush* apologist CALLERS were nauseating!

Ignorant, unintelligent, mindless drones. x(

I'm not sure how I'm going to handle this on a daily basis.

good grief.

I'm getting either XM or Sirius radio for my car ASAP - I cannot go back to listening to that crap!

28. Yeah. One Idiot Woman From California. . .
. . .said she didn't believe any of the Marine stuff and had no answer when Brian said "I'm not accusing them of anything. The Marine Corps is!"

The part i find most baffling: 8 people charged w/ murder or obstruction. 68 people, all Marines, investigated it, and 15 people, all Marines, testified to the investigators. And people like this are supporting the troops by taking the side of probable felons and against the troops who are seeing to justice. So, 83 TROOPS worked on the case, but 8 TROOPS need support. So, supporting 9% of the troops, who might be murderers, is "supporting the troops."

Nauseating.

39. Exactly, because what is really behind it is their genocidal
hatred of Muslims, therefore, they just happen to support the troops who do wrong rather than the troops who did right and reported it. They may even criticize the troops who reported it. To them, killing Muslims is what it is all really all about.

9. Satellite radio
I believe both XM and Sirius have lefty radio options, and NO COMMERCIALS.

I don't have satellite myself (yet), because I enjoy listening to Stephanie Miller during my morning commute, who is home-based on KTLK AM 1150 in L.A. My own personal hell is when she is on vacation (like now) and has the horribly painful and unfunny Elayne Boosler fill in. Say what you want about her stand-up act, she is TERRIBLE as a radio host.

I know they pay the bills, but the frequent commercials on 'regular' radio drive me to distraction at times.

19. There is a simple reason...
.. for commercials on the TALK channels.. most (if not all) are re-broadcasts of LIVE shows that are also on commercial stations... if they had no commercials, then you would have to have them all TAPE-DELAYED.

Now, the MUSIC channels are commercial free... (except for 5 on XM, which CC won an arbitration to put commercials in .. however XM added 5 more commercial free channels with the same formats.. so it's a wash)

30. Commercials and talk radio go hand-in-hand
Many of the shows are syndicated, and offered via barter, meaning that the syndicator sells some of thier own ad time, and the affiliate gets to sell the rest of the ad time.

XM and Sirius sell their locally-allotted time. They also sell on their own exclusive shows, like Howard Stern, Alex Bennett, etc.

Ad breaks are necessary. After all, the host does need to go to the can, inhale a cigarette, gulp some coffee, and surf web porn sometime, right? At least DJ's (if there are indeed any live DJs on the music channels) can play music.

Air America station to stay in Madison

MADISON, Wis. — After a backlash from this liberal city, Clear Channel Radio is keeping its Air America affiliate on the air instead of switching the progressive talk format to sports on Jan. 1.

Citing the overwhelming negative reaction to the planned change, the nation's largest radio station operator said it would keep The Mic 92.1 FM on the air as a progressive talk station.

The planned change to Fox Sports Radio, announced three days after the Nov. 7 election, had sparked outrage in Madison, a city long known for its liberal activism. Clear Channel said the station, WXXM-FM, had struggled to attract advertisers despite high ratings and a sports format would be more profitable.

But thousands of people protested the end of their favorite station through e-mails, phone calls and a petition delivered to station officials this week. A rally last week drew 500 people, and politicians such as Mayor Dave Cieslewicz and U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., denounced the decision.

18. How I am keeping sane post-midterms - no radio, no TV,
no newspaper - I dip into DU to get the news highlights and my fill of energy from this great group - otherwise, doing some reading, listening to great music, long walks with my wife and our dogs, kayaking when it is warm - I can't get drawn into all of the ruminations about 08, etc.

so, this place is keeping me sane and informed (if I am indeed sane!).

in Boston no less, there are so many progressives out there, if you can stream New Haven still has their progressive station. Stephanie Miller is on vacation Elaine Bowsler is filling in for her. Terrible AAR is so stupid with their programming.

geez, AAR is totally out of sync with their listeners, first WLIB in NY went off, now Boston, and even with the new move to WWRL, the radio reception is terrible. I have to sit in front of the computer to stream.

29. A number of stations seem to just broadcast bits and pieces -
Edited on Fri Dec-22-06 10:14 AM by bullwinkle428
for example, we had one station in eastern Iowa that was a full-time progressive station. They carried both AAR shows as well as Stephanie and Ed, and I guess the ratings were pretty good, but apparently, they had trouble getting businesses to advertise, which I would think was impossible as the liberals supposedly control the entire media according the wingnuts! Another station out of Cedar Rapids runs Randi Rhodes and Thom Hartmann on delay...better than nothing, but I'd be lost without Internet streaming...

33. AAR is a radio syndicator
They don't require affiliates to carry the whole slate of programming. Rather, they can add shows from other syndicators (like Jones, Nova M or WOR), air local programming, and can even delay shows that conflict with other shows. Only a few stations air the whole AAR schedule straight off the satellite, but these 'latchkey' operations often do little to promote it.

Actually, I think this is a good approach. It enables stations, if they choose, to craft what they feel is the strongest lineup possible, suited for the particular market and the station's listeners. At least, that's in theory.

Check my previous posts on how-to.

You don't even need an iPod. If you can play mp3 files, you can play most podcasts.

And most of the hosts on WKOX do indeed have podcasts available of their shows.

-I am getting to be a regular on the station around here

I call about once a week. There is a host here (local following Beck and Rush) who is so whoafully uninformed that it makes my ears hurt. I call in all the time and get on fairly regularly.

Once you have done it (keep it really simple-don't ask questions just state facts-don't get personal) it is not that big of a deal.

I usually drive in to work around 9am so I have Lynn Cullen, local liberal on radio station WPTT 1360. Following Lynn they have Thom Hartmann. Then I can stream Randi or Ed Schultz at work. 7-10PM if I'm driving around we have John McIntire, liberal host and comedian and great voice impersonator of Bush, Cheney, Clinton who does some funny skits on KDKA 1020. Sundays 4-8:30 Chris Moore another local liberal on KDKA 1020 who gets some great guests.

Only holes in the schedule 3-7 if I'm out in the car or weekends so I usually listen to books on CD.

But I do wish we had Air America or some other national liberal talk. The damn righties still saturate quite a bit of talk radio here.

From allaccess.com:

CBS News/Talk KDKA-A/PITTSBURGH VP/Programming KEITH CLARK confirms to ALL ACCESS a few changes at the station.

JOHN MCINTIRE is being being replaced by NEAL BORTZ 7-10p effective JANUARY 2, with ongoing discussions about another show for JOHN still ongoing. I.C. LITE SPORTS TONIGHT ends on DECEMBER 29, replaced by a second news hour 6-7p. JEFF HATHHORN (co-host of the sports show) will continue as KDKA Sports Dir. and expand his sports reporting though out the day. And PAUL RASSMUSSEN joins the KDKA newsroom as an anchor from WQIK/JACKSONVILLE.

John just started doing his show earlier this year. Wonder what the hell happened. I wondered why they had Xmas music on in his slot last night.

Well KDKA has gone to hell in a handbasket during the past year. Couldn't happen to a more deserving station!

Do you have the exact link to story - I couldn't find it? Thanks.

Hopefully John will get a gig on another station, and Scott Paulsen is moving to talk and I think he's kinda liberal. Don't know what he'll talk about. I remember he had this Bush putdown song he played a couple of years ago - "Let's bomb Iraq" that had Bushie solving all his problems by bombing Iraq.
