I've been kind of skeptical about Hackett lately, but a SOTU response would've been great from him.

Consequently, I pick him. Anyone would have been better than Kaine, but seeing as the lame stream media never covers the response properly anyway, it matters little. Hell, they should have just had the LA mayor do his in both English and Spanish....

Kerry on SOTU: Bush 'fantasyland'
RAW STORY

Remarks released by Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) on Bush's State of the Union Address.

#
“President Bush tonight described a very different state of our union than the one most Americans live with every day. In fact, he described a fantasyland. In Republican Washington, the rhetoric continues to mislead and the promises continue to be broken. It’s going to take more than poll-tested lines in a speech to strengthen our union. It’s going to take change in Washington to make America stronger.

“President Bush refuses to tell the truth about America’s dependence on oil. It’s the Bush Administration and Washington Republicans who are addicted to oil, and this Administration refuses to break the dependence that undermines our economy and threatens our security. America’s dependence on oil has gotten worse on this President’s watch. He won’t acknowledge that Vice President Cheney let lobbyists write an energy bill behind closed doors that’s helped the big oil companies earn record profits while Americans are squeezed at the pump. We can’t drill our way to energy independence, we must invent our way there, but we can’t do it if this President won’t tell the truth about our energy future.

“President Bush uses national security as a political weapon while day by day we become less secure. We’re bogged down in Iraq where there were no weapons of mass destruction while Osama bin Laden is still on the loose, North Korea has quadrupled its nuclear weapons, Iran is closer to nuclear weapons, and Hamas has come to power. Our brave men and women in uniform deserve presidential leadership equal to their sacrifice. Americans deserve the truth. President Bush needs to stop retreating from reality. We can’t afford leadership that still cuts and runs from the truth.

“Here at home, middle class families work harder to make ends meet as pensions disappear, credit card debt mounts, and health care costs soar while President Bush’s tax policies continue to shift the burden from wealth to work. President Bush won’t tell the truth about their America. Health care premiums are up, the ranks of the uninsured continue to grow, and seniors still struggle to afford prescription medication while lobbyists for the big drug companies write legislation that guarantees big profits. President Bush won’t tell the truth about that America.

40. He, along with Feingold, is the only one who's been consistently liberal.
Kucinich comes closer to expressing what I call "mainstream liberal deocratic values" on a consistent basis than anyone I've seen. (Feingold comes in second.) Kucinich is even better than Ted Kennedy, imho. While I'm a fan of Barney Frank, Jerry Nadler, every member of the CBC, Mike Honda, and most of the Progressive Caucus, I think Kucinich is the one with the balls and the mastery of the issues across the board.

26. Kaine wasn't what I'd call bad, but
he was totally uninspiring. Someone called him Mr. Rogers, but Mr. Rogers would have been better. Kaine is probably a real nice guy, and he said nothing that was wrong, and he's probably a good governor, but to say they couldn't have chosen someone better? We needed someone who could inspire, a leader.

The reason the DBC chose Kaine....is simple
HE IS NOT Running FOR PRESIDENT.

CMON people think this through.....If they chose chose anyone looking the big Gig in 2008, they would have hacked off everyone else aspiring to be the nominee....

They were wise to not pick anyone from that list.

Kaine did fine and was a fine choice.

32. Now, now, no need to repeat yourself
:D I chose "other" from that list as I'm smart enough to agree with what you say above, except for the final choice. I don't even remember what he said. All I remember is that I agreed with what he was saying. I'm willing to bet that most Republicans and Independents as well as many Democrats just tuned him out after a few minutes. A little more "gumption" was needed.

27. None of the above
We needed someone outside of the partisan senate to counter Bush. Americans are tuning out partisan bickering and are fed up with congress. A governor from Warners VA was a great choice. Americans still respect governers.

29. I can agree with everything
you said until you got to which governor. Frankly, I found myself distracted and amused by his facial expressions, and remember little of what he said. There must be a governor with similar qualifications somewhere in the US who could have been chosen. At times I wasn't watching him while he spoke, and his voice just didn't grab my attention. A professor like that would have most of his students snoozing after a few minutes. A preacher like that would hear snoring from the congregation. He might make a great counselor. He's probably a great guy and I certainly have nothing against him, but he's the kind of person who doesn't stand out in a crowd - in other words, he's like most of the rest of us - nearly invisible.

35. John Kerry, of course
The American people deserve to see who they could have had leading the nation, for better or for worse -- in my opinion, much much better.

Well, it just seems obvious to me. I didn't vote for him in the primaries, but I worked my butt off for him in the general. Sen. Kerry spent months of his life criss-crossing the country, working up the crowds, getting his name out there, and making his positions known. I think it's about time he took a more vocal position on the issues facing us, and his recent initiation of a filibuster shows that he may be thinking the same thing.

if you wanted a southern democratic governor I would have gone with Phil Bredesen of Tennessee. He has a nice speaking voice and isn't a DLCer (surprise huh?). You can see him at http://www.bredesen.com or http://www.tennessee.gov If you want someone who isn't a governor I would've gone with John Murtha or Wes Clark.
