Faith, as the old saying goes, is eternal. And it surely must be so. It's the only reason I can explain why, for some years now, respected editorial writers on both sides of the vast divide have often ended their columns with a literary crossed fingered euphemism regarding George W. Bush's coming to some spontaneous epiphany in light of a days recent findings of new fact or what passes as glaringly obvious truths to most of us. But substantial world events that make most thinking people pause and provoke thought are always met with the shrug and that dull-eyed stare that Bush is so (in)famous for.
Six years now. Nada. Six years of criminal acts against the Constitution, inexcusable negligence, fraud, empirical wars and national shame. Decision after tragic decision that have left our nation torn apart, schools wanting and obvious contempt for those of us working the hardest to pay their involuntary tithe to Halliburton, The Carlyle Group and a long line of other war profiteers who are bleeding us all dry to benefit the ridiculously few who already possess too much. And not one good idea that has resonated in a triumph for this pesident in six agonizing years, and still we look away and wistfully fantasize that maybe tomorrow it'll happen, as each day passes and yet he is unchanged, comfortably living down to our lowest expectations.
Like the classic test for sanity, we repeat the same process of disbelief and hope over and over, expecting a different result, as our pleadings for virtually any intelligent course change away from the current disaster(s) go unanswered at this White House, and when they do act, it is to deepen their commitment to actually worsen the situation. Yet in that blind faith, we all persist in this Quixote-like quest, seeking that which by all evidence does not exist: the potential that Bush will suddenly become a decent man and save the game in the last seconds with one final "hail-Mary" pass of statesman-like behavior.
This president has never recognized reality-based reality. His is a world of only one truth; that of his own concoction; one myopic delusion wrapped tightly in a blanket of messianic self absorption. I think that even the most discouraged of us, dream in our most optimistic moments that he's just pretending to be this dysfunctional, this creepy, and that there may actually be a method to his madness. Alas, none has been forthcoming, and if you can judge any man by his actions, (I believe that's in the bible) then no good news or revelation can be expected within the remaining slow and torturous crawl of this presidency to its eventual and unavoidable tragic end.
And yet, still we hope upon hope for that "hail-Mary " pass.
