Whoa, it's a republican Hippie...it's a Rippie...
Since when did "idealism" turn from the liberal to the republican side? It seems between 2001 through 2005 rolls changed where you have the "hardened liberal" that scrutinizes the system and the "pie in the sky republican" with an okie-dokie view of reality. They are the polar opposite of hippies. They don't make trouble. Their political action is single issue focused and profitable (time is money, even "volunteer" time). They only have support rallies instead of protest rallies. Their view is local rather than global, i.e., only until the issue enters their neighborhood will they act.

The Rippies hold the belief that the US will save the world from itself. That once the world sees that through a christian democracy and tax cuts a nation can achieve utopian perfection. It's called idealism. You see it all over the internet and through out conservative society. Here is a mere example and you will find others at the link:

http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/12/28/feedback.yir/index.html

"The people of Iraq voted freely for the first time in years without retribution. We started to see the fruits of our labor in Iraq in other ways too. Their industries started to flourish and it showed in the faces of their citizens. All in all, in spite of the minority of outsiders that called themselves insurgents, the people of Iraq started living and not just surviving. And no matter how many troops we lost over there, they continued to do their jobs willingly and without a heavy heart. And this all happened without the assistance of our politicians. In the face of massive tragedy, our hearts gave of ourselves freely after Katrina in both money and deed. Those impacted by that storm showed their resilience. They refused to let a storm kill not only a city, but an entire region. Within hours of the eye of the storm passing, Air Force aircraft based in Biloxi were delivering humanitarian goods and assistance to the rest of the ravaged areas. Within hours of the storm hitting, we were giving our money to assist in the rebuilding. And finally, the National Guard was there to restore peace and stability to the region while providing logistical support for the rebuilding effort. But it was the people of the region that did the most by raising their voices to be heard and starting the efforts on their own. There are countless other items that demonstrated my point, but in the end, no matter what happened around the world this year, we had a great year. We had it because of our spirit and generosity. Not just as a nation, but as a society of man the world over."
Truman, Bowling Green, Ohio

Poor Truman...poor, poor Truman...so many like him/her.

4. What freakin' planet is Truman on?
Or is he in some bizarre real-world version of the Truman show where his reality is wholly manufactured and fictitious?

5. I once submitted a story about Republican hippies to a workshop,
and about half the class said they had known one. It's not uncommon at all.

7. I have a fundie republican hippy relative
She dresses like a hippie, lets her kids run around naked (real "free spirit"), doesn't care at all about keeping a neat house or outward appearances, is very liberal with the sex talk and the four letter words. But she's a real fundie, buys into all of *'s ideas about EVERYTHING, and is totally incurious about the details.

9. Now THAT'S scarey!...
Everyone is entitled to be an individual, but I've never heard of such a contradiction in view vs. lifestyle.

Sure Bob Graham preached/wrote/stumped over family values and was revealed as a million dollar losing gambling addict/Las Vegas lush...

Sure Bill O'Rielly talked/wrote/shouted about family values and then explicitly sexually harassed a female coworker...

Sure Georgie/Dicky/Condi/Rummy had stumped for war at the detriment of honesty even though they had all never had military experience...

Wait, forget what I said about your relative. She's sane compared to the people in the republican party.

10. LOL
You're right; their hypocisy knows no bounds. But did you mean Bill Bennett in the top example? I love Bob Graham, the Dem Senator from Florida, regardless of his "charisma" problem.:)

11. The new radical populism
Edited on Wed Dec-28-05 04:09 PM by 0rganism
It's impossible, at this point, to roll back the progressive changes of the last century gracefully. What the rightwing desires instead is a radical shift, an instant return to the gilded age. Their so-called "conservative" policies are not conservative in the usual sense of the word, which implies gradualism and tradition, or even reactionary in the sense that they go well beyond an immediate response to progressivity in defense of status quo. The status quo of 10 years ago was significantly more progressive than it is today.

What we are looking at is the face of a new radical populism: an anti-minority, anti-gay, anti-tax, pro-corporate, pro-theocracy, pro-imperialism revolution.
