Obama on Monday Night Football (VIDEO)
Edited on Tue Dec-12-06 12:48 PM by jefferson_dem

Corporate media hype...? Whatever. Nice performance, Obama!

Hardhat on... Let the slings and arrows begin.

Major announcement: Obama backs Bears
Illinois senator mocks presidential hype by revealing his choice ... in NFL

WASHINGTON - Democratic Sen. Barack Obama, a potential presidential candidate, planned to end weeks of speculation Monday and tell a national audience ... he supports his hometown Chicago Bears.

Having some fun with all the political hype, Obama mocked the frenzied interest by taping the introduction to ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” game between his hometown Chicago Bears and the St. Louis Rams.

“So tonight I’d like to put all the doubts to rest. And tonight, after a lot of thought and a good deal of soul-searching, I would like to announce to my hometown of Chicago and all of America that I’m ready ...”

He looked very good last night. :) The Rams were TOUGH too. VERY fast team. Grossman did good last night. GREAT game.

29. here's the thing about Grossman, and Chicago especially
we have never really been a team known for strong, marquee QBs. You'd have to go back 40 years, at least.

Chicago is about three things: A fierce Defense, a solid RB, and a terrifying middle linebacker. (we still need the running back, lol).

But its never been about Grossman.

He's good, but hes not great. And a lot of the games we have won have been due to Defense, both in suppressing offenses and defensive scoring. Hell, look at that game against Arizona...

But it annoys the hell out of me, because when Grossman struggles, all the commentators jump all over him, "was he overrated?", "is he slipping?", "hes not as good as we thought", "guess the bears aren't the offensive powerhouses we thoguht they were". You know, crap like that.

It annoys me how the commentators act like the Bears are something they are not, just to tear them down.

31. Don't get me started on the commentators! We MUTE our TV and turn on 7.80 AM to listen to the game
calls. ;) They're much more gracious about our Bears than National commentators are. We listen to Chicago radio while we watch the game on teevee.:) I really felt bad for Grossman last night. The sports know-it-all commentators on ABC just wouldn't lay off of him (time to tune in Chicago radio!). He showed 'em last night though. I agree that he's not great, but he has gotten us to 11-2...along with the DEFENSE, I know. Last night was a do or die situation for Grossman. Lovie was ready to pull him if he didn't do well. Someday we'll have an outstanding QB....'til then, Rex will have to do.

2. BWAAHAHAHAHA!
That was so well done. It's sounds like he's going to announce for the Presidency, but yet at the same time he doesn't and it's a great little joke!

Barak Obama has more experience than Abe Lincoln did by the way.

He has great political intuition. He just endeared himself to a whole bunch of men, who will be drawn to give him a listen, when they wouldn't have otherwise.

8. I agree. Here's a sample of reactions from neocon central - NRO
From National Review Online conservative types, for what it's worth -->

—I watched the Bears game with my father & wife's grandfather in Dupage County Illinois. Unlike the rest of America we know how to vote. (Have fun in Washington Congressman Peter Roskam!) Both my father & my wife's grandfather starting voting Republican right out of the womb. But when the Obama Monday Night Football cameo ended they both turned to each other & said, "I like that guy." Mitt, John & Rudy, be afraid, very afraid.

— Obama's turn on Monday Night Football was actually very well done. I don't like his politics, but it's hard not to like the person. He's got an easy smile and came across like "It's cool to be asked to do this, so I am doing it." Nothing awkward at all. He's very non-threatening.

9. He got great exposure and demonstrated a sense of humor
His impressive academic credentials can be expected to be used against him by the rw, painting him as an educated elite (which in a good way I think he is) in order to try to make him seem out of touch with and alienate working class voters from him.

That little clip is a terrific step to head that off. It's always great to see a potential national leader with a great sense of humor.

12. Little problem there
They're going to want to paint him as too inexperienced to be President - highlighting his education would work against that effort. Besides, people expect elected officials to get a good education - as long as they remember where they come from. (Or pretend to, like Bush)

15. I'm sure that's true, but then Bush wasn't smart or experienced
at a national level either. He also had a history of fucking up and then getting bailed out by his father's special interests. He got elected largely on the notion that he was a guy you'd drink a beer with.

Obama did himself a favor with last night's spot.

11. Fascinating that he gets such wide media coverage.
Isn't it? Makes you wonder who he had to blow to get this much airtime.

Don't like that word? Fine. Then simply ask yourself, "who is he going to owe favors to?" Murdoch?

Media decentralization is one of the primary challenges of the modern body politic. Anyone know Obama's position?

Suffice to say, his name has been all over the news for weeks now. Covering up other stories which are actually relevant to what is going on in the world, by the way. And even with all that coverage, I still have no idea what his politics are. Although I remember his participation in the gang of 14.

People, people, people. Pick your own candidate. Don't let the media moguls do it for you.

As far as getting information to choose your own candidate.

Obama was not part of the gang of 14 and voted against Roberts and for the Alito filibuster.

17. Obama is actually very strong critic of media consolidation. He was not in the "Gang of 14."
Here's a story on a letter, co-authored by Obama and Kerry, to FCC Chairman regarding ownership rules.

"We urge prompt completion of the proceeding and...urge you to complete the proceeding before consideration of broader media consolidation issues begins in earnest," Kerry and Obama wrote. "The goals of promoting minority, women, and small business ownership in the communications industry are set forth in the Communications Act of 1934. ...Ensuring that such directives are accomplished is important to achieving a diverse media, particularly in an era of increased media concentration."

19. Wow!
"People, people, people. Pick your own candidate. Don't let the media moguls do it for you."

Can you give us one example of someone who let the media pick Obama as their candidate? And, just because you don't what his politics are, doesn't mean that others don't either.

23. Just a question here... is Obama's candidacy being sponsored by NBC?
That seems like a good way to run a campaign--get corporate sponsors. It works for PBS, it works for the local art festivals, and it even worked for George Bush when he ran for president--he got huge corporate sponsorships from Halliburton, KBR, and NewsCorp. Is that why Obama's getting all the free hype?

If this is how he gets his campaign going, shouldn't ESPN also do puff pieces on Vilsack, Brownback, and Kucinich? That sure sounds like "equal time" to me.

are living proof you can have a lucky horse shoe up your ass and still play football. They will never make it past the first round of the playoffs.
But Obama rocks.
