A Sit-Down Interview: The Halliburton/KBR Story
Edited on Mon Nov-20-06 09:05 AM by CorpGovActivist
I have a sit-down interview scheduled this morning with a major MSM outlet. As soon as I know more, I'll post. Meanwhile:

http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&ie=UTF-8&q=halliburton+devonport

http://quicktake.morningstar.com/Stock/AllNews.asp?Country=USA&Symbol=HAL&MaxDisplay=100

The placeholder page on my site has been updated, as well - with the full-fledged site in beta right now.

- David A. Smith, Editor of www.HALwhistleblowers.org
(not to be confused, ever again, with David R. Smith, the as-yet-unindicted VP of Tax at Dresser Industries, and now at Halliburton)

P.S. For additional details, please see the Halliburton-related threads in my journal: http://journals.democraticunderground.com/CorpGovActivist

... to pull all coverage of Congress for the next two years, the Halliburton/KBR story is going to be getting out there - one way or another.

So, it looks like the KBR spinoff is going ahead, but, to me, it's not looking like such an investment bargain.

According to a Globe and Mail article, KBR was only responsible for about 10% of Halliburton's profits. However, they took in about 42% of the revenue. That seems a pretty razor-thin margin.

AND, with the KBR government service branch's large US Army contract due to expire next year with a less than KBR-friendly Congress, can we look for further depreciation?

Although, if the manure hits the turbine with your (and other's) revelations, I don't think we'll be seeing a continuation of "business as usual" for either KBR OR Halliburton.

"So, it looks like the KBR spinoff is going ahead, but, to me, it's not looking like such an investment bargain."

Well, the interesting thing to watch will be once the secondary market (i.e., the general investing public) really dives in.

"According to a Globe and Mail article, KBR was only responsible for about 10% of Halliburton's profits. However, they took in about 42% of the revenue. That seems a pretty razor-thin margin."

Well, more granularity comes when you look at the KBR expense line and sub-items, e.g., legal fees paid to BakerBotts.

; )

"AND, with the KBR government service branch's large US Army contract due to expire next year with a less than KBR-friendly Congress, can we look for further depreciation?"

That would be LOGCAP III, a contract bid my proposal team in the Arlington, Virginia office worked on.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=logcap+iii

The fraud, waste, abuse, graft, corruption, over-billing, and intentional criminal activity involved in this one contract alone could keep Congress busy for the next two years - and get both Halliburton and KBR barred from all Federal Government contracting.

"Although, if the manure hits the turbine with your (and other's) revelations, I don't think we'll be seeing a continuation of 'business as usual' for either KBR OR Halliburton."

You could very well be seeing prison terms for the C-levels, including Cheney.

Subject: Halliburton/KBR E-Mails, Redacted

From: [email protected]
Date: Mon, Nov 20, 2006 1:18 pm
To: [email protected]
Cc:
Bcc: (redacted)

Ladies and Gentlemen:

As you may recall, Halliburton's paid spokesflak, Cathy Mann, stated flatly to the media that my claims are "completely without merit," when contacted for comment regarding my SEC filings: http://www.chieftain.com/business/1159080121/3

Attached hereto, please find the first batch of redacted e-mails, which will help to illustrate that Ms. Mann's pronouncements from Houston leave much to be desired in the way of factual grounding. I have shared these and other e-mails with Federal investigators, at their request. Also, the FBI/DOJ demanded that Halliburton produce the backup tapes of my e-mail account (and of David R. Smith's e-mails) on Friday, July 23, 2004 - a fact that Ms. Mann ought to be able to confirm for those of you working on stories.

Page 1 of the attached is an e-mail dated August 7, 2001, received within the first week of my employment at the Government Operations outfit of KBR, in Arlington, Virginia. Matters of note include: (1) Even in the internal e-mail system, I was differentiated by the notation of "(Arlington)" - which should have clued in the panic-stricken Halliburton in-house counsel who later sent me the mis-directed e-mails intended for David R. Smith, VP of the Tax group in Houston; and (2) DOCCC - referenced in the subject line - is the Design On-Call Construction Contract, one of the first projects I worked on at KBR: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=design+on-call+construction+contract+halliburton

Page 2 of the attached is an e-mail dated April 28, 2003, sent on my last day at KBR. Matters of note include: (1) As you can see, I was "[email protected]" to those outside the company e-mail system, and "David Smith (Arlington)" to those inside the company's e-mail system, so the panic-stricken Halliburton in-house counsel who later mis-directed the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act cover-up e-mail to me really botched things up ("big time," as the former Halliburton CEO might say); (2) the recipients are redacted here, as they may very well end up being called as witnesses in future proceedings; and (3) I tried to leave on good terms.

Page 3 of the attached is an e-mail dated April 28, 2003, which contemporaneously memorializes the cover story that Halliburton/KBR provided to me. David Swindle - who now heads up the "competitor" that is vying to "compete" with KBR for a key (and controversial) contract renewal - said that the company's proposal operations were cutting back on the use of outside contractors (which was both ironic - given KBR's line of work - and patently untrue). David Swindle and many other KBR alums are planning to make a "competitive" bid for the KBR work in question (and if any journalists on the bcc: list are unfamiliar with the Federal prohibitions on collusive bidding on Federal contracts, I'd be happy to walk you through the regulatory provisions; the running joke use to be that "if there's a Swindle involved, there's a swindle involved."): http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/061103/army_logistics_contractors.html?.v=2

Page 4 of the attached is an e-mail dated April 28, 2003, in which the minor detail of whether or not my e-mail account (the source of so much trouble for the Houston brass) would be closed or not is discussed.

These four pages help to bookend my time at Halliburton/KBR's Government Operations in Arlington, Virginia. I have two more sit-down interview spots left before the Thanksgiving holiday, for any journalist in the bcc: line interested in sitting down and looking at unredacted copies of these and other e-mails/materials pertaining to my allegations. Otherwise, please feel free to contact me to schedule time after the end of this holiday week.

Regardless, I wish you and yours a very safe and joyous holiday, with much to be thankful for,

- David A. Smith, Editor of www.HALwhistleblowers.org (new placeholder up; full-fledged site in beta testing)
(not to be confused, ever again, with David R. Smith, the as-yet-unindicted VP of Tax at Dresser Industries, and now at Halliburton)
